John Mullan Obituary

Mullan MD, John F. "Sean" Of Chicago, passed away on June 3, 2015 at age 90. He was the beloved husband of Vivian, father of Joan, John, and Brian and grandfather of Caitlin, Sean, Aidan, Kevin, and John. Sean was born in County Derry, Northern Ireland. He received his neurosurgical medical education in Belfast, London and at the Montreal Neurosurgical Institute, then moved to Chicago to become a faculty member at the University of Chicago in 1955. There he continued for the rest of his distinguished career. Sean was a pioneer in his field, developing neurosurgical procedures that are now commonplace today. The recipient of many prestigious honors, he published over 140 papers, served as the Director of the Division of Neurological Surgery and also as the founding director of the Brain Research Institute, both at the University of Chicago. While he loved his city, Sean was born on a farm and never lost that passion; he was an avid Michigan tree farmer for much of his life. He was revered by his family, colleagues and patients for his strength, compassion, empathy and personal wisdom. Visitation will take place on Sunday, June 7 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Dalcamo Funeral Home, 470 West 26th St., Chicago, IL 60616. Family and friends will meet Monday, June 8, 2015 10:15 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 5472 South Kimbark Ave., Chicago for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. For info 312-842-8681

Prayers and support go out to the Mullan Family. I was a patient of Dr. Mullan's at the age of 17 in 1973. He treated me with such respect and caring. He always spoke directly to me, never deferring only to my parents in making decisions. He had such a generous, caring disposition and a wonderful sense of humor. He was able to make me laugh during an extremely difficult time for me and my family. John (Sean) Mullan leaves a legacy of grateful people: his patients, his friends, his students and his family. What a wonderful man. We will never forget him.

I had the honor of meeting this great Dr.in the early eighties.I was a patient who was referred to him because other neurologists couldn't diagnose my problem but thought I had MS.I was in my early thirties a father of three and was beside myself.Once I met this fine gentleman and great doctor whose compassion made feel at ease right away.Even though he had such a high position at the hospitall due to my request he stayed on as my doctor even though through the initial testing it was found that surgery would not be required. He suggested I shouldsee one of the highly qualified neurologists at the hospital. But as I stated at my request he stayed on with me through all the tests until my problem was diagnosed. Now some thirty so e years I'm still thinking of that great Dr.that helped me through that rough time.

Our son, Will, was diagnosed with a grade 3 astrocytoma in the mid-80's shortly after he graduated from College. We were extremely fortunate to have had Dr. Mullan perform surgery on him. We will never forget the care which Dr. Mullan provided Will, his calm demeanor when we were in a state of panic, and his compassion. Thanks to this wonderful surgeeon we still have our son. Please accet our sincere condolences to the Mullan family.

Sean Mullan operated on my husband for an AVM in 1990. During the operation there was a bleed and my husband lost 27 pints of blood. Several doctors said that "only Mullan could have pulled this off" and I truly believe this. My husband was able to live a fairly normal life and see our children grow. My husband kept in touch with with doctor Mullan occasionally over the years. His talent and expertise as a surgeon were surpassed only by his compassion and care for his patients and their families. He will be missed.

Dr. Mullan saved my late brother in 1990 when his AVM surgery hit a "snag" due to a hemorrhage on the table. 15 hours in total he and his team saved David and gave him 25 more years. While Dr. Mullen had a high position, we saw a real person who cared about his patients and their families too. Thank you Dr Mullan for all you have done.
