John Mixon Obituary
Portsmouth - John H. Mixon Sr., 82, USN Retired, of Portsmouth, VA went to be with our Lord on April 27, 2017. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Estella Blow Mixon; two brothers, Roosevelt Mixon and Alvie Mixon, Sr. He is survived by; daughters Mary Edrian Hairston (Larry) and Johnell E. Mixon; sons John H. Mixon, Jr. (Marilynne), Joel D. Mixon, and Jay L. Mixon. Grandchildren, Anthony L. Hairston, Erin N. Hairston, Brenton A. Mixon, Jerimi F. Mixon (Shaheedra), Amber R. Mixon, Matthew M. Hawkins, Jayson L. Mixon, Garrett J. Mixon, and Jacob R. Mixon. Seven sisters, Emma Dillon, Mary Jones (Henry), Norma Robins (Roosevelt), Minnie McKnight (Herbert), Pauline Grady (Herbert), Annette Coney (Rev. Dr. George), Helen Martin (David) and one brother, Jessie Mixon (Viola). In addition, he leaves four sisters-in-law, Josephine Reid Mixon, Ora Lee Leach, Alice Joyce Pierce, Carolyn B. Watts; one brother-in-law, Lawrence E. Blow, Jr.; a devoted neighbor and friend, George H. Jeffries and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017, 1:00 p.m. at Third Baptist Church, 461 Godwin Street in Portsmouth, Virginia. Reverend Joseph A. Fleming, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

I served with mixon for 3 years from 1958 to 1961 in Puerto Rico and it was there that he give me the nickname of Greek . But we kept in touch while we served in the Navy up until
20016 ,that was the last time we talked on the phone . I can truley say that big Minn was a top notch navyman and a bronze star receiptiant from his actions in Vietnam during that war ! We both retired from the Navy as chiefs , rest in peace mixon , good job !

I remember he always spoke well of his children and grandkids....He was a strong soldier and he made sure to instill in his prodigy the value of hard work.

Truly a soldier of the Cross! I had great times with Uncle John H. We shared many stories together, especially when I was stationed at Fort Monroe . He and aunt Mary were both at my promotion party when I made Major. The Holloway family loved him dearly; especially his first cousin , my mom Lucinda! They talked all the time. Please accept our sincere condolences in Love.
