I only learned of Johns's passing yesterday and am deeply sadened by the news. Although it has been years since I have seen any of you wonderful Gorman's or any of my former peers at GPC, I have so many fond memories of my time with all of you and think of you often. John was one in a million--always with a smile and some wonderful advice for those who looked to him for wisdom. Knowing that he spent his life with Pat, Christine, Maryl and Carolyn certainly ensured that he lived and died a happy, happy man. Take care... Mary Kay (Murphy) Rieke

Dear Pat and Family,
I'm so sorry to hear about John. To say I enjoyed the years working with him very much would be a gross understatement. When I was commuting back and forth from the East Coast to Chicago one year, John and I spent many lunches and dinners together discussing our industry. I used to call him "The man of a thousand ideas." There was always one amongst the many that was just absolutely brilliant. He never stopped strategizing and thinking about "What if ...?" He, along with Bill provided me with what has turned out to be an excellent education in the publishing business. I will always be indebted to both of them for that.
I hope all of you are well.
Best regards,
Pete Lachapelle

I found myself sitting next to Pete LaChapelle at our favorite Sushi restaurant tonite. When I asked if he ever talked with the family, he passed on the sad news of John's passing.
I always enjoyed his company and that of you two. There will never ever be another more enjoyable Thanksgiving dinner in my lifetime. It was the most engaging and wonderful evenings with all the members of your family.
I never pass through Midway without thinking I might see you going thru as well.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. He was a wonderful gentleman.

Dear Pat & Family -
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time.
John was one of the nicest men I have ever had the pleasure of working for. My years at Gorman gave me some friendships that I still have today. I have never worked for another company where I enjoyed coming to work every morning as much as Gorman Publishing.

Words are so inadequate at a time like this, but may the comfort of friends and family be your strength now and the days ahead. I feel very blessed to have known the GPC family and have worked for John. His passion for publishing inspired many. My thoughts and prayers are with the Gorman family.

I'm so sorry to hear about John's passing. I was Bill and John's secretary back in the Hancock Building and then the move to the O'Hare area. What two wonderful gentlemen to work for! There were stressful days but John was always there for support. My condolences to everyone in the family. He will be missed.

Dear Pat & family,
I was very sad to learn of John's passing.
I will remember him as a very supportive man who was just as kind and caring to new employees of Gorman Publishing as he was to long-time company veterans.
He was always supportive of his employees and truly enjoyed the special company projects that took place back in the 1980's --ranging from the annual Prepared Foods' New Products Contest to compiling the constantly-evolving annual Leading 50 reports.
Despite the many daily stresses of trade publishing, he always had that twinkle in his eye, maintained a great sense of humor and was always there for anyone.
My condolences to you and your family, Pat, and may the many great memories of John and the positive impact he has had on so many people give you strength and comfort.

John had a profound and positive influence on my early career. I remember well his enthusiasm and optimism. He was the consummate professional, as was reflected in his hosting a group of students from Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism. "Whatever you think your new magazine will cost, double it, then double it again..." Years later when I became an business advisor to the Medill program, I oft repeated his advice. My condolences to John's wonderful family.

My sincere condolences to the entire family. My early days at GPC led to the success in my life. I will always remember how happy John was when a salesperson bought a boat, a new car or a house - a mortgage payment meant that they had to work harder and sell more space! He was a kind and genuine man.

I have such fond memories of my time at Gorman Publishing Company back in the late 80s and early 90s, and to this day have not worked at another company where my fellow employees felt like "family". I attribute that feeling of inclusiveness to the leadership and warmth of John and Bill Gorman. I remember the great Christmas parties with crazy skits, the famous "road rally", and so many laughs that made my days at the office fly by.
John was such a genuine human being, and I truly enjoyed my time working with him as his executive assistant. His faith in my abilities and encouragement that I could contribute even more gave me the confidence I needed to move forward with my career, and I will be forever grateful.
To Pat, Christine, Maryl, Carolyn, Bill, Viv, and the entire Gorman family, I'd like to express my sincere condolences on your loss. John will be missed, and I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

Uncle John was a good spirit. He was wise, truthful, and responsive, with a ready smile. My Dad spent a major part of his life working arm in arm with John building the great Gorman Publishing Company from a germ of an idea to a multimillion dollar, nationally respected industry leader. Like my Mom says, Uncle John saw Dad more than she did. My conversations with John were short, but I always felt John listened to me & responded with his related experience. They were satisfying exchanges, and I treasure that about John. My heart is with his loved ones who feel this loss so deeply.

I will always have fond memories of John. I remember him telling and retelling the Dawn Donut Advertising Success story and tale of him and Bill starting Gorman Publishing using the metaphor of walking the plank with a fire on one end and shark infested waters on the other end with failure not being an option. He truly was nice person and an inspiration to every one he came in contact with. He will certainly be missed. My prayers and thoughts go out to the family.

I have fond memories of the time I was able to spend with your wonderful family and always found John to be a very gracious and warm man. I will always remember him as the "Captain" of the Spacehawk! He was a great guy...
