He was born in Boston on March 23, 1920, a son of the late Eugene and Anna (Bruno) Calarese and graduated from Boston English High School. He was a former Quincy resident and had lived in Chelmsford for the past 12 years.
In 1953, he earned an associate's degree in industrial engineering and was class Marshall at Northeastern University. He received his bachelor's degree in engineering and management in 1955. He was also a member of the Sigma Epsilon RHO Honor Fraternity.
Mr. Calarese was a Navy veteran of World War II and was awarded the Victory Medal and the American Theater Medal.
Prior to his retirement, he was director of management and engineering at the former Boston Naval Shipyard for 35 years. Mr. Calarese was the first civilian to become director of the Boston Caretaker Group at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and to fill the position of industrial engineering officer.
During the Boston shipyard's closing, he was presented with the Navy Superior Civilian Award for outstanding contributions to the Navy Department.
Mr. Calarese was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. in Chelmsford.
Survivors include three children, Robert E. Calarese of Norwood, Linda A. McCarthy and Marie L. Lannan, both of Chelmsford; a brother, Joseph J. Calarese of North Easton; a sister, Mary Figurito of Roslindale; also eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was also the brother of the late Frank P. Calarese and Vincent J. Calarese.
