Joel Hall Obituary

Hall, Joel Arthur

Joel Arthur Hall, aged 75, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024 with his three children at his side at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, IL. Joel was born on July 9, 1949 to James Hall and Betty Hall (Petitclair) in Waukegan, Illinois as one of five children (Jay, Barry, Joe, Jeanne, Betsy). Joe went on to become a three sport athlete earning two all-state honors as well as an all-American recognition playing football for Waukegan High School. He was recognized as a state qualifier in wrestling, and helped lead the 1967 Waukegan Bulldog baseball team to a 2nd place finish in the state tournament as their all-state catcher. In the 1967 Major League Baseball draft, Joe was selected by the St. Louis Cardinal baseball organization, however, Joe and family instead elected to accept a full scholarship to play football and baseball for the Northwestern Wildcats. Earning three collegiate varsity letters and honored as the defensive Captain of the football team, Mr. Hall completed his student athlete experience with a degree from Northwestern University in 1971. That same year, Joel Hall went on to be drafted by the New York Yankees and competed for four seasons in their minor league system while completing his master's degree over the summers at Northwestern. Married in 1971, Joel and Susan Hall raised three children, Jamie, Stephen (married to Dr. Kendra Hall), and Stacey (married to Chris Bruce White). Of all his titles and accomplishments, he was most proud to be called "Papa Joe" to his three grandchildren: Stella, Cole, and Remy. He adored his grandkids and spent as many hours as possible trying to keep up with their busy lives. Joe was raised in a family that loved the outdoors, especially camping and fishing. He found heaven on earth with a fishing rod in one hand and the other on a 9-horsepower Johnson off the back of a small aluminum boat. Joe's sense of humor was ranked second only to his insatiable ability to tell a story. He was loved and will be missed by many. Separated in marriage, Joe is survived by Susan Hall, his children: Jamie Hall, Stephen Hall, and Stacey Hall (White) and his two sisters: Jeanne Brousseau and Betsy Hagan. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Glen Club (2901 W Lake Ave, Glenview, IL 60026) on Friday, November 22 at 6:30pm. All are welcome. "Joey" and I were fraternity brothers, college baseball teammates, and very good friends. Every time I would get back to Chicago, we got together and reminisce about our college days and always had a great time. Just this last September, we had lunch and exchanged old stories for over 4 hours. I will miss him immensely. RIP. You were one of a kind. God bless you, Joey.

Joel was one of the most loving men I have ever known. I cherished our times together and loved talking and laughing with him and hearing his great stories. My heart is deeply saddened to have learned he is no longer with us but he will remain deep in my heart forever. Rest in peace dearest Joel. My sympathies to his family whom he loved so dearly.

I was a only a classmate of Joel, class of 1967. I remember him as a great athlete and to me a serious boy who would succeed wherever he choose his life to take him. His passing brought great sadness to me. His academic and athletic achievements are not surprising to me. Rest in peace dear Bulldog....

My deepest condolences to the entire Hall family on Joel's sudden passing. He & I became good friends starting in high school & baseball teammates all 4 years. At his wedding in '71, it was my honor to be his best man. While we hadn't got together since NU played in the '96 Rose Bowl, it was a grand reunion which I fondly remember: Joel, Sue & family members came out here to SoCal for the parade, game & festivities -- all starting with drinks & dancing at Loew's Santa Monica Beach Hotel featuring Rick Telander's band. Then on game day after the parade, outside the Rose Bowl Mike Adamle hosted a tailgate party in a huge, deluxe Airstream trailer. While NU came up short vs. USC in that game, it was the time we shared together for those few days to reminisce & laugh that was truly memorable & special. And thinking back to the beginning of our friendship, perhaps above all it was Joel's signature quick, resounding laugh that stays with me, and always will. May he now rest in peace.

Sincerely,
Gary Kolar

I worked with Joel at AAA and we became friends after the store closed. He was a very charismatic guy who had a huge heart (and laugh). I am so sorry for all his family- he spoke about you with such pride.

To Sue and the familymy deepest condolences for the passing of our dear friend Joel. We were on the Northwestern baseball game together and the stories he used to tell were legendary. He was a great man and always was having a good time. The last time I saw him was when we played golf together with Rick Halperin, Mike Reeves, Joel and me. I was teamed up with Joel for a 2-man scramble and with our limited golf abilities we managed to come in 2nd and a nice gift certificate. He will be missed. Rest in peace my friend!

I was fortunate to have been his neighbor. Always a big smile and friendly wave as our paths crossed daily. He always had a funny story or a gardening tip. I will miss seeing him working in the yard or sitting on the front porch in the evenings.
Condolences to his wonderful family.
