Joan Callahan Obituary

Callahan, Joan Pfau age 80, of Waukegan, died on Friday, May 1, 2009 at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. Joan was born on December 4, 1928 in Racine, WI, the oldest child of Ennis "Speedy" Pfau and Charlotte (Robertson Pfau) Moore. She graduated San Jacinto High School in Texas at age 16, attended Rice University and then transferred to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. While at the U of I, she met Harold R. Callahan whom she married on October 22, 1949. She lived in Waukegan for the next 60 years. Joan was a pioneering working mother. In 1969, when the youngest of their eight children started kindergarten, Joan earned her real estate license. A few years later, she and two partners started their own firm, Callahan Blandings Schaper Realtors (CBS). After 20 successful years as a real estate agent and broker, she retired in 1989, although she continued to be one of the owners of North Shore Printers, Inc. Joan was very active in her community including being a founding member and past President of the Waukegan Community Players, AAUW Nursery School, Lake County Crimestoppers and the Waukegan Garden Club. She was elected to three 6-year terms on the Waukegan Park District Board and also served as President. She was a member and past President of the Waukegan Schools Foundation. She was a member of the Junior Women's League, a board member of the Waukegan Lake County Chamber of Commerce and a lifetime member of the Glen Flora Country Club. She was a member of many environmental groups including the Illinois Dunesland Society, the Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy. In the late 1990's, she spearheaded Waukegan's efforts to replant Liberty Elms after Dutch Elm Disease ravaged the town's trees. She was a member of St. Anastasia Church. Joan was an avid athlete who swam nearly every day and in 2004, she was proud and thrilled when she was awarded her varsity letter from the University of Illinois for participating in both swimming and basketball in the 1940s. Joan will be remembered by her large and loving family and to all who knew or came in contact with her as a unique and generous individual. She was a quirky collector of antiques, world traveler, and a theater and movie buff who rarely slowed down. In her 70's, she participated in the Polar Bear Plunge and was a Senior Olympic Basketball Champion. Her collection of rings, purses and sweaters never failed to get noticed and she always had a story to share to go along with them. Survivors include her children, Joe (Caroline), Peter (Crystal), Jay (Mary T.), Melissa, Charlotte (Martin) Wozniak, Shelagh (Ray La Soya) and Amy, her beautiful grandchildren Kimberly, Kellyn, Katie, Tierney, Chandler, Zachary, Jacob, Matt, Grant, Zoe and Henry. She was preceded in death by her best friend and husband of 57 years, Harold, her father, mother, brothers John and Jim, son-in-law, David Franklin, and her adored son, Henry. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. Anastasia Church, 624 Douglas Avenue, Waukegan. Friends are invited to a luncheon at Glen Flora Country Club following the service. Memorial donations can be made to the Waukegan Park District, 2000 Belvidere Road, Waukegan, IL 60085 or the Henry Pfau Callahan Memorial Foundation, 535 S. Sheridan Road, Waukegan, IL 60085. To the Callahan children, Joe, Pete, Jay, Melissa, Charlotte, Shelagh, & Amy: We were so sorry to hear of the death of your mother. I have warm memories of visits to your big cheerful homes when you were very young. You were all such bright, active and energetic children. In recent years, we were so appreciative that Joan and Harold reached out to visit with our family here in Anna, IL on a couple of their trips to Texas. They were both the same loving, generous persons I remembered from years past.
Our sympathies are with you all.
With love,
Laura (Pfau) Britton, husband Larry and your cousins Kurt Pfau, Eric Pfau, and Jean (Kittie) Stratton

We are so sorry to hear of our dear friends death and sorry too that distance will keep us from being with the family.
Joan was such a part of my growing up. I was always treated with such thoughtfulness and generousity. I was the babysitter yet included in the family activities. I loved Joan as a sister and she treated me as part of her family.
I babysat from early grade school days through High School and would even come home from college so they could attend the Illini Homecoming. Wayne and where married in '65 but still came in from DesPlaines the following falls until we moved to Omaha in '69.
I can tell you that one of the happiest days of late was getting together with your Mom when she came through Omaha on her whirlwind western road trip. Thank you Peter for being your Mother's traveling companion and alloting time for us to share that special, happy time together. I will be forever thankful.
Joan and Harold are together again, but now it is for
eternity. How blessed we all are for having had them in our lives. I know they will remain a part of my memories.
Our prayers and loving thoughts are with you dear ones.
Fondly,
Wayne and Carol Johns Corey(Omaha,Ne)

Joan always kept in touch with me after my mom was moved to Texas. Joan & Harold came to visit her, bringing Lake Michigan water in milk jugs (mom's only request). When Joan walked into the bedroom my mom's eyes just lit up! I will never forget the joy that Joan (& Harold) brought to my mom's life that day. May the peace which comes from the memories of love shared comfort you now and in the days ahead.

My mom and Joan were good friends. They were on opposite sides of the political fence (they used to trade donkeys and elephants as gifts at Christmas),but that did not get in the way of their strong friendship or their shared love of community service. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Joan's home was always a place where I could take our 7 children. The playroom on North ave was great and we could sit and solve all the world's problems while the children played. She will be greatly missed by all our family.

My parents and Harold and Joan were friends for many years, active in many of the same Waukegan organizations. Joan was a mentor and role model for many of us professional women in Waukegan, and my kids loved her purses! She will be missed.

Joan and my Mother Elizabeth Dady Pabody remained friends until Mother died 1/2004. Their friendship began in the 1940's. When we moved to Shreveport Louisiana in 1959, our families continued their friendship. Joan was a wonderful, loyal, thoughtful, sincere, and fun person. I know her entire family will miss her. You are all in my thoughts and prayers as you prepare for her Memorial Service on Saturday.
