Mary E. "Marilyn" Smith, née Carey, age 87, of Chicago, died peacefully Friday, February 27, 2026, at her home with her son Jack by her side. Beloved wife of the late Jack Smith; loving mother of Mary Jo Msall, Maureen (Ivan Gazidis), Jack, Maggie, and the late Tom; dearest grandmother of Lucy (Simcha Barkai), Camille and Matilda (Nico Banks) Msall, Costa and Aidan Gazidis, and Conor Smith; delighted great-grandmother of Ori Barkai Msall; devoted daughter of the late Tom Carey and Josephine Foley; dear sister of Jim Carey and the late Tommy, Virginia (Dick Ferguson), Marjorie, Jack, Dorothy (Jack Calhoun), and Mike Carey. Marilyn was also preceded in death by her sons-in-law Laurence Msall and Kent Smith. Marilyn is also survived by her brother in-law Bill Smith; her sisters-in-law Marilyn Shiel Smith and Deborah Smith and many nieces and nephews. After graduating from Immaculata High School, Marilyn earned her R.N. degree at St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing and worked there for many years. She later earned her Master's Degree at Loyola University of Chicago while raising five children and then taught nursing at Loyola University and later at Georgetown University. Visitation, Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 4 to 8 p.m., at HABEN Funeral Home & Crematory, 8057 Niles Center Road, Skokie. Family and friends to meet for Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, March 6, at 10 a.m., at Holy Child Jesus Catholic Parish (Saint Margaret Mary Church), 2324 W. Chase Ave., Chicago. Private Interment, Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Evanston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kids Above All (kidsaboveall.org) or Danny Did (dannydid.org).
