Dearest Robert, Emily, Silva, Karen, and Arlene, and family,
As you share the beautiful memories of Janet, our thoughts, prayers, and love are with you.
Emily,
You are blessed to carry forward the elegance and charm of your extraordinary mother. She illuminated everything around her with strength, pride, and a regal countenance. While you, mom, and dad grew together and shared the beauty of life, regrettably, I have been distant, in communication and continents.
In the first few decades of Mom's glorious life, Mom was one of my two closest friends (Dad was the other).
Mom and I were inseparable friends. She has been amazing for over six decades.
When thousands cheered at sporting events in high school, it was mom they cheered for the loudest, leading the pom pom squad, with fervor, smiles, and incomparable beauty. And, her smarts! OMG!
She was brilliant.
When people talk about the Bulls and Jordan, it's famously said, I wanna be like Mike. Well, in high school, and then at the University of Illinois, the chant from those around her was, I wanna be like Janet!
So true!
And, then, there were many nights, as I drove through Champaign Urbana , when I called Mom, exhaustingly asking if I could crash at her place. As an older sister, she questioned nothing. That was a good thing. Haha. She always took me in. The sofa was prepared like a Westin Heavenly bed, and a hot meal was prepared. She always loved those she loved without reservation and unconditionally. All part of her caring and nurturing constitution.
Mom was a pioneer in many respects. She aced it in athletics and devoted herself as a sports fan aeternum . She aced it in the classroom. She aced it in personality. She aced it in humor. She aced it through life. She was the first CPA I ever knew. I didn't even know what CPA stood for then. Most of us didn't know there was more to paying taxes and accounting than a 1040 short form.
Yet, once again, mom was way ahead. Perspicacious. Sagacious. Insightfully brilliant.
In a humble way, mom always knew what we were thinking and planning. Mom could discern people's intentions, sarcasm and wit, long before it would be expressed. She had laser focused intuition coupled with a unique laughter.
Her indelible laugh and smile is a jewel of optimism for your lifetime.
When Dad and, most importantly, you, came into her life, she devoted herself as a Mother with Olympias qualities. Undoubtedly, Emily, you are charting a remarkable path forward in life.
As you and Dad, your grandmother, Aunts Karen, Arlene, and others look up into the daily sunshine, or nightly star-studded sky, I know that, in the last week of December, Mom jumped aboard NASA's New Horizon spacecraft as it reached its epic journey to the most distant spot of the Universe ever.
Your mom, and my dear friend, Janet, she was way ahead of us in her journey, when near us, and now, still way ahead of us universally.
Her radiant memories will journey forever.
With much love,
Rory, Leslie, and Trent

Dear Silva, Karen, Arlene, Rob, Emily and Family,
Janet was a very special person. I was lucky enough to reconnect with her on Facebook. She didn't want to go to any of our high school reunions, but she did agree to have breakfast with me the morning of our 45th reunion. I even surprised her by inviting Marty Singer to come. I enjoyed listening to them reminisce about their childhood neighborhood and Middleton. I will always treasure that breakfast time together. I even gave Janet an old Cub button, and a Trojan pin from our pom pom days together at Niles East. I will say a prayer for Janet and for all of you.

Dear Elkins and Feder Families, May all the wonderful memories of Janet comfort you at this difficult time. Robert, I'm sorry I didn't personally extend my condolences at shiva, but it was a pleasure seeing how beautiful Emily has grown up. To Mrs. Elkins (Silva), Karen and Arlene, seeing you brought back all the wonderful memories of friendship and childhood experienced on St. Louis Ave. Special times with special people. Fondly, Judy Aaron Whisler

This is such sad news. Janet was a member of my Sigma Kappa pledge class. We served as officers together and I admired her leadership ability. In recent years we reconnected for some sorority events where I came to again appreciate Janet's kindness and sense of humor. I am sorry she suffered with cancer. Her passing is a loss to many. My condolences to Robert and Emily.

Janet was such a kind soul. I will carry with me fond memories of her at as a wonderful next door neighbor, Middleton, Oakview and Niles East student and fellow explorer of the new houses, as they were being constructed around us. I can still picture the many summer nights when Janet and all us St. Louis kids would play olly olly oxen free, until the Elkins cow bell would ring calling us all in. Rest in peace Janet.

Robert, I am so sorry for your loss. When I think of my childhood at Middleton, Janet's name stands out front and center. From bus stops to homeroom, birthday parties and bar mitzvahs, she was always there. For all of us Middleton kids, I feel like a little part of our childhood has been taken from us. G-d bless Janet's soul and G-d bless you and her family.
