Jan Soule Obituary

Soule, Jan Ellen

Jan Ellen (Lane) Soule, age 69, passed away at home in Chicago, IL, surrounded by loving family on February 1st, 2024.

Jan was born on October 11, 1954 in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Dennis and Carol (Main) Lane. She was the third of five children and is survived by her loving husband John; sisters Rita (Gil Paris) and Nancy (Michael Postula); and her brothers Greg and Kevin (Lynn Radde), along with several nieces, nephews and grandnieces/nephews.

Jan graduated from The University of Illinois with a BA in Psychology. After a period working for Booz Allen, she attended Rosary College and earned a masters degree in Information Science. Jan then commenced a career as a researcher, working for Arthur Anderson, Hewitt Associates, Kirkland & Ellis and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Jan was a bridge life master and avid competitive player, an activity through which she met her husband John Soule. They married November 15, 2003, and set about restoring their bungalow in the Chicago neighborhood of Old Irving Park. In addition to playing bridge, they enjoyed travel, road trips, bicycling and other outdoor activities. Jan was active in their community, participating in CAP meetings, volunteering as a Court Advocate, and at the local food pantry. She was a generous neighbor and kind friend to a diverse and interesting group of people. She will be remembered for her organization and diligence, gentle listening skills, and keen sense of humor and social justice.

A celebration of life service will be held at Saint John's Episcopal Church, 3857 N. Kostner, on Tuesday February 27, 2023 at 11:00 AM - Ice Cream will be served!

Jan enrolled in my beginning bridge class in December of 1993. Of more than a thousand of my bridge students, Jan was the smartest! We also became good friends. Jan was resolute in her goals, and a deep thinker. I'll always remember the times I shared with Jan and John, and with Jan and other Lanes. May God help you, John, along with Rita, Nancy, Greg and Kevin through these difficult times.
