One day at VA West Side Chicago we were doing an Aortobifemoral lower extremity arterial bypass. Things went poorly and the patient coded during surgery. I was the intern. He told me to go out to the waiting room and let the family know their loved one was doing poorly and might not make it. I did that and his wife said would you baptize him please? I said ok and went back and told Dr Schuler: I told her he was doing poorly and she asked me to baptize him. But I'm A Jew. I don't know how to baptize anyone. Dr Schumer took a basin of heparinized saline and scooped out a handful. He said So am I. But in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit I baptize thee! The patient died but I learned a lot about being a Doctor from that.
