To the family of Dr. Hannigan: Today is January 9, 2024 and I am just seeing this obituary. (I moved to Ohio in 2009). I was lucky enough to work as an oncology clinical research coordinator with Dr. Hannigan and his team. He and his team made my job so enjoyable and rewarding. He was very supportive and kind and I learned so much. I remember fondly Dr. Hannigan“s large Wizard of Oz collection in his office and his love of community theater. I am deeply saddened by his passing. I doubt anyone will see my note but I am replying anyhow. RIP Dr. Hannigan and I hope you are enjoying the heavenly Land of Oz.

My deepest sympathies to Dr. Hannigan's family. He was my mom's oncologist in early 2000. He gave us so much more time with her than any of us ever expected. He will be greatly missed. I am a U of C employee and hadn't had much contact with Dr. Hannigan since mom passed in 2008, but this really makes me sad. Mom always liked talking to him about acting. She was amazed that he had time to participate in so many plays. They had a lot in common, mom was also a very faithful and devout Catholic. May he rest in peace.

To say he was a gentleman and a scholar does not do him service. I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of this wonderful man and physician. My deepest condolences to his wife and family. I was happy to hear that when he passed he was certainly not alone having his loving family and friends, colleagues and co workers at his side. How appropriate he passed where he had done so much good. He helped countless patients through their darkest and scariest times in life. He did it with grace, knowledge, love, and most importantly compassion. I was blessed to have met him while I was In my residency training at LaGrange hospital. Little did I know how much I would learn from him over the years. I have met many doctors whom I try to emulate but he was at the top of that list. He truly earned respect through giving respect. He was simply a great example for a young physician. He clearly loved his profession and his patients. He truly lived a life of service and sacrifice. Jesus teaches us this is the true and only way to genuine happiness. So I am happy he has earned his eternal reward. Sorry it had to end but we know the Lord only takes the best. I will miss my friend. I will miss exchanging pleasantries in Italian with him when our paths would cross. He would shout ,Buon Giorno, Antonio ! when he would see me in the halls or LaGrange. Rest In Peace my friend. We will meet again.

To Susan and all of Jim's family:

I am very sorry for your loss. Jim was my teacher, a coworker, and a friend. He was one of the brightest doctors with whom I ever worked. He had a great sense of humor.

And he was a pretty good actor.

I am glad to have had the opportunity to know him.

We will miss the marvelous contributions of Jim to our world in so many respects it's hard to imagine how much good he accomplished in his all too short life. I see his happy face and boundless enthusiasm -- a bon vivant of the highest order. We at TWS feel our loss keenly. Prayers and condolences for those who mourn him.

Jim was the first doctor I met when I was an intern at the University of Chicago. He was only a second year internal medicine resident, but Jim already had the poise and judgment of physicans many years his senior. Jim was for me a teacher, a mentor, a colleague and a friend. Over the years, I had many patients who had a smile on their face when they mentioned their oncologist--Dr. James Hannigan. Jim was a truly a doctor's doc--brilliant, selfless, jovial and compassionate.

While we mourn his passing, his legacy are the thousands of patients that he served during the many decades he was in practice. He cured some of them, treated many of them, but comforted all of them.

May the Lord give strength to Jim's family and, most especially, to his devoted Susan.

May his memory be eternal.
