My condolences on the loss of a true gentleman. I saw Jim in my office on Kedzie and had many good conversations. He packed a lot into 100 years. I´m happy he is with Sally once again. I´m sorry I´m out of town or I would definitely attend in person. May he rest in peace.

An expression of appreciation and of gratitude from his son
This is in memory of James Finn, and with gratitude for all we owe to him.
A remarkable individual from a remarkable generation, these individuals survived the
deprivations of the Great Depression, they won World War II in less time
than the US was in Iraq, and not stopping after surviving economic
deprivation and a world war, continued working hard with
discipline and self-sacrifice that is becoming increasingly rare, and
went on to build the greatest economic powerhouse the world had ever
seen. They, my father included, honored the ideals that our nation was
founded upon and built a shining beacon of hope and freedom.
As this generation passes, we honor our
father's memory by remembering what he stood for.
This is in appreciation for the aircraft carrier aviator, Jim Finn, just a
teenager when he flew all those dangerous missions but
survived when so many did not. Because he defied the great odds
against him, we were given the gift of life.
He was of that generation not given to overt displays of affection or
emotion, but as his long full life in this earthly realm seemed to be
concluding, he made sure that all of his children knew he loved each
and every one of them equally.
There is a scene in Act 2 of Shakespeare's Hamlet where Hamlet is
deep in grief over the recent loss of his father.
At this time, this scene resonates.
Hamlet is with his friend Horatio, and tells him,
"My father--methinks I see my father--"
"Where my Lord?" Horatio asks in wonderment, knowing the father is dead.
Hamlet responds, "In my mind's eye, Horatio."
Horatio consoles him and says, "I saw him once he was a goodly king."
Then, the grieving Hamlet sums it up with something that is
appropriate to our own father, the survivor, the hero, the warrior,
the king--
"He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again."
