James Finn Obituary

FINN, JAMES S.

James Steven Finn of Chicago passed away on February 23, 2023 at the age of seventy two. Jim was born on May 23, 1950 to James and Helen Finn. Jim was born and raised in Little Flower Parish on Chicago's South Side.

Jim was a proud graduate of Little Flower Grammar School and Little Flower High School in 1967. Jim was an extremely proud patriot, bravely serving his country in the United States Army and completing two tours in Vietnam from 1969-1971.

Jim worked as a Chicago Local 130 Union Plumber and for the City of Chicago Water Department as a Plumbing Inspector. He was actively involved in the Piscateers Fishing Club, Father Perez Knights of Columbus and the VFW Evergreen Park American Legion.

Jim is survived by his wife of fifty years - whom he loved and adored - Mary (Leslie) Finn and his daughters, Megan (Anthony) Radon, Susan (Drew) Seydel and Jenna (Brendan) Maher. Proudest Papa to Mary, Grace and Sara Radon; Jimmy and Emma Seydel; Brendan, Connor, Johnny and James Finn Maher, born 3/2/23. Jim was the best friend, fearless leader and oldest brother to David (Gayle), Richard (Patty), Tom, Larry (Mary), Nancy (Joe Sullivan), Roger (Susan) and Donald (Joanie). Fond brother in law of Tim (Susan) Leslie, Margie (Dan) O'Connell, Richard Leslie, Bill (Marianne Rowan) Leslie and Joany (Tibaldo) Alvarez. Beloved nephew of Michael "Mick" and Betty Finn. Favorite Uncle and friend to David (Jenny) Finn, Caroline (Garrett) Nesheim, Kevin (Linda) Finn, Bill (Rachel) Finn, Richard Finn, Marty Finn, Patrick (Carly) Finn, Bridget (Jay) McDonald, Brian (Sarah) Finn, Nicole, Elizabeth and Matt Finn, Jack, Jimmy, Nick and Amanda Finn, Timmy (Molly) O'Connell, Danny, Mary Kay, Eileen and Carrie O'Connell, Andrew Harrigan, Tara, Claire, and Griffin Leslie, Tommy, Joe, Kate and Emmy Alvarez. Great Uncle to many. Lifelong friend to his Little Flower buddies/brothers. Cherished friend of the greatest neighbors, the Gallaghers.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Helen (Sheehy) Finn and his brother Larry Finn; his parents in law, Walter "Buck" and Jean (Beland) Leslie; his fond Godmother and Aunt, Mary (Sheehy) Lehr; and his best friend, Pat "Teddy" Lyons.

Jim was the leader of the Finns - he was a giver, a protector and a friend. He was brave, honorable and ALWAYS the funniest person in the room. He lived life his way, and he was a true inspiration to everyone who was lucky enough to know him. As Jim would say, "well done is better than well said" and "there is no shame in losing, the shame is not doing your best".

The Finn girls would like to thank our family, friends and neighbors for surrounding us with so much love, laughter and strength.

Services will be held Saturday, March 25, 2023 at St. Barnabas Church, 10134 South Longwood Drive, Chicago, Illinois. Visitation with the family will be from 9:00-11:00, and funeral mass at 11:00am.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held immediately following. ALL ARE WELCOME!

Interment will be private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Our family would like to thank Neptune Society, who has been in charge of cremation arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jim's honor to a charity that is close to your heart.

Jimmy, old friend, we had fun growing up in Little Flower Parish. It was a unique place to be then. Our Teachers, Nuns and Priests provided solid foundations in our lives making it easy to understand "Duty Honor Courage" which you and I learned in the military. George S. Patton, Jr. once said, "The soldier is the Army. No army is better than its soldiers. The soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one´s country." You bravely served completing two tours in Vietnam 1969 - 71, Bravo Zulu! "Bravo Zulu" is a Naval signal, conveyed by flag-hoist or voice radio, meaning "well done" which is an acknowledgement you would prefer.
