There was a time when the world felt too heavy for my shoulders when the noise at school and the silence at home both hurt in their own ways. It was during those times, without needing to explain or ask, that I found myself at the door of Mr. Crow´s office.
Mr. Crow wasn´t just a school staff member. He wasn´t just a principal or counselor or any box you could check. He was something else entirely. A calm harbor in a storm.
His office always smelled faintly like coffee and old books. There was a soft lamp in the corner, and toys scattered on a shelf next to a row of books no one else ever seemed to touch. And he Mr. Crow he would just look up from whatever he was doing, give a quiet nod, and wave me in like I was supposed to be there. Like I belonged.
He never asked too many questions. He never pushed. He just noticed. If my eyes were red, if my shoulders were slumped, if the day had been cruel he knew. And he cared.
And he looked out for us really looked out. If someone hurt one of the kids if we were being bullied or overlooked you could see it in his eyes. That quiet fire. Not rage, not loud anger, but something deeper. A protective fury. He´d handle it. And we knew he would. We felt safe because of him.
I don´t know if he ever knew how much that meant. How much he meant. But I carry pieces of that office with me still the calm, the safety, the quiet kindness of a man who let a hurting kid just be.
Mr. Crow wasn´t just a part of the school.
He was home.
To the family and friends condolences to you all.

I googled James Crowe because I was looking for my 8th grade teacher.....who I loved as a teacher at George W. Dewey School at 54th and Union in Chicago.....I'm not sure if this was him. However, I'm very sorry for your loss. Patricia Boldrey Barnes

My deepest condolences to the Crowe Family. I was a former student of McCormick Elementary while Mr. Crowe was the principal. My family was one of those families who were not so fortunate. His kindness and generosity was so very appreciated and will always be remembered. I'm just sorry I didn't get the chance to say thank you personally to him.

Mr. Crowe is surely the most wonderful boss anyone could ever have. When he retired from McCormick we immediately felt the void. He was just awesome! We had a lot of fun times with him. I'll never forget how myself and a few co-workers actually taped him in his office with masking tape. We taped the door shut, as a prank of course. Then we asked the office to call him out into the hallway...he couldn't get out! Not for long as he pushed through the tape like superman! We had even more to laugh about as he didn't get mad, he laughed with us! We have so many fond memories of Mr. Crowe. He is so sadly missed and will never be forgottten. Thanks for all the wonderful memories Mr. Crowe! Sincerly, Arlyce Giudice (Early bird)

He was like a second father to me growing up. My heart goes out to Katie, Maggie and my best friend growing up, James Jr.. So many wonderful memories, not the least of which were our annual excursions to St. Louis, Great America, the car & van shows, and the train collector's show. What other father would take his kids and their friends to a Journey concert and love every minute of it? He was simply the best.

I am privileged to have met him, although only once. From what I know, Mr. Crowe was the foundation of strong family ties and good character. God Bless.
