Jack Bono Obituary

Bono, Jack Alex 80, a resident of Northbrook and formerly a longtime resident of Wilmette, died Wednesday, November 16, in Burlington, Canada. Mr. Bono was born on May 10, 1925 in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania. He served as an ensign in the United States Navy during World War II. Jack graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, married his wife of 54 years, Bette Jackson of Winnetka, Illinois, and began his career at Underwriters' Laboratories all in the same year, 1946. Mr. Bono worked at Underwriter's Laboratories for 44 years, the last 12 years in the role of President. After joining the company as a technician, Jack quickly rose through a succession of positions, becoming the youngest man to head a department of the firm. During his career, he was recognized nationwide as an expert on safety and fire prevention, leading many industry organizations, including the National Fire Protection Association. While he was President, the firm went through a period of unprecedented growth, which is why Jack was often referred to as "Architect of UL." He was a visionary, responsible for the expansion of the lab's facilities, broadening relationships with overseas firms, developing new services and strengthening partnerships with national, local and state officials. After the death of his first wife, Jack married Marian Pearce of Ontario, Canada. Jack and Marian lived together in Covenant Village, Northbrook, Illinois, and Burlington, Canada, for 3 years. Mr. Bono was a 60 year member of the Church of the Holy Comforter in Kenilworth, Illinois, and served in many lay positions in the parish including Senior Warden. Throughout his life, when Jack developed an interest, he pursued it with great enthusiasm. He was an avid golfer, frequent world traveler and active fundraiser. Jack was a devoted father, adoring grandfather, and loyal friend who was loved and admired by many. Jack is survived by his children, Meri Lane McCarthy (Joseph), Bette Lynne Bono (Alex Knopp), Steven Bono (Rosemary) and John Bono (Lucy); grandchildren Jessie, Andrew, Anthony, Grace, Jeffrey and Laura; stepchildren, Susan Wheelihan (John), David Pearce (Deanna), Barbara McEwan (Jamie); and eight step-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 25th, at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 222 Kenilworth Avenue, Kenilworth, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brandel Endowment Fund, Covenant Village, 2625 Techny Road, Northbrook, Illinois, 60062.

Dear Marian and Family,

Please accept our sincere condolences. Jack was a wonderful man. His decision to ask us to move from Long Island to Northbrook in 1984 changed our lives. We have since become proud Midwesterners with no desire to return to New York. Our daughter, who was 13 at the time is now married to a man from Arlington Heights, and has two children and lives near by.

Jack and Bette were very helpful with our moving here including suggesting that we look at houses in their condominium, Cobblewood. We looked and bought a home in Cobblewood the very next day.

We were very fortunate to be able to travel with Jack and Bette to the Far East for three weeks in 1989. They were excellent traveling companions – always upbeat and patient, even when the customs officials in Taipei wanted to register each of Jack’s golf clubs and every piece of Bette’s and Donna’s jewelry we were bringing into their country. We had a few problems with cancelled airplanes but through it all, Jack took the problems in stride and we just continued on. It was a trip of a lifetime for us.

Jack’s UL retirement party was on March 22, 1990. In his thank you letter to the retirement committee, of which I was a member, he said: “I have been the luckiest guy at UL in having people assist me and look out for my welfare during my entire career, and the retirement party is a shining example of that good fortune.”

Nobody but Jack could say “thank you” with such heart-felt words. He will be missed.

Sincerely,

Donna and Don Mader

Our sincere condolences to the Bono family.

Jack was a former president of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and was elected to the grade of Fellow of the Society in 1980. In recognition of his many accomplishments, the SFPE Education and Scientific Foundation established "The Jack Bono Award for Engineering Communications" in 1994. This award is given to the author(s) whose papers (during the prior year)most contributed to the advancement and application of professional fire protection engineering.

In addition to his stature in engineering, Jack was a kind and gentle man whose friendship was much appreciated by his many colleages.

My sincere sympathy to the Bono family. As a retired employee of UL (28 years of service), I remember Jack always being a smart, friendly and caring man. He knew al of us by name, and was never to busy to say hello. He will be missed and UL has not been the same since he left.

Sincerely,
