J. Rodos Obituary

Rodos DO, J. Jerry J. Jerry Rodos, DO served his patients, students, profession and community with unparalleled dedication during his nearly 60 years of practicing medicine. His career included experiences in clinical medicine, behavioral medicine and medical education, as well as leadership positions in state and national osteopathic associations, and federal health policy organizations. Dr. Rodos passed away on January 21, 2016 after a brief illness. He would have been proud of the fact that he both lived long enough to hear of the birth of his first grandchild and that he was able to continue to see patients until a few days before his death. A graduate of what is now A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Kirksville, Mo, Dr. Rodos achieved board certification in Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Correctional Health Care. He operated Transitions Counseling and Consultation in Matteson, IL, and cared for patients in several correctional facilities. Dr. Rodos served as Dean of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Biddeford, ME, and what is now the Midwestern University-Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove, IL. He also served as interim Executive Director and Associate Executive Director of the American Osteopathic Association and Associate Editor of the American Journal of Clinical Medicine. A health policy advocate long before health care policy made national headlines, Dr. Rodos' efforts to increase access to care in underserved communities resulted in the reauthorization of the National Health Service Corps, originally established in 1972. At age 82, he still saw patients at his Matteson office; provided psychiatric care for two prisons; mentored students; lectured monthly to psychology students; and worked with a program preparing physicians for advocacy in public health policy. A dedicated dog lover and breeder, Jerry continued to steward dog shows after retiring as a judge. Countless friends and colleagues relied on his expertise when looking for just the right dog to bring home (he remained biased towards Saint Bernards). He is surely enjoying spending time with all his favorite pups who preceded him in death. Jerry's interests were too many to list; he always treasured the company of family and friends, particularly when accompanied by a glass of red wine or single malt scotch. To that end, he was a founding member of the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society of America. Jerry is survived by his wife of 33 years, Joyce (nee Pennington); his children, Adam (Christine) and Nicole, and his granddaughter, Camille. A celebration of his life has been held. I was a patient of Dr. Rodos many years ago and today6/17/25, as I took a moment to reflect on the doctors who helped me on my long path towards rebuilding my health, I thought of how awesome Dr. Rodos was not just as a doctor but a human being. I was actually looking up his address so I could send him a note and thank him for all he did to help me get my health under control as well as the suggestions he gave me that helped me with my daughter when I came across his obituary.
This world lost not only a great doctor but an incredibly kind and caring man.
My sincere condolences to his wife, children and all who loved him.

It was a privilege to learn from Sir Dr. Jerry J Rodos. He has healed so many lives. J Jerry taught me more in an hour than other attendings did in a year. Dr. Rodos instilled need for taking care of patients complexity and need not ability to pay. I know pioneer Dr. Jerry J Rodos is still solving the worlds problems and helping those most in need with love in heaven.

Dr. Rodos was my Doctor in Rhode Island. He was the absolute best Doctor. He made me feel at ease even when I was in pain. I wish he was still in Rhode Island and still my Doctor. RIP, Jerry.

I was just thinking about him today, went searching and found this. He pretty much saved my 'mind'. When he formally diagnosed me with Aspergers in '93 ( when I was 32 years old ) after being kept by other doctors on a massive cocktail of absolutely inappropriate medications helped me wean off of them and helped me learn to understand, cope and accept who I am. One of only 2 doctors that I will ever trust. He is remembered and missed.

Dr. Rodos delivered my second son on July 13, 1973 at Cranston Osteopathic Hospital. He allowed me to have the completely natural birth I wanted and to have my husband and mother present. He let me go home less than 24 hours later. This would not have been permitted at Women & Infants Hospital of RI at the time, although he had just become the first osteopath to gain admitting & delivery privileges there. He was a wonderful physician and a lovely man. I'm so sorry I waited too long to look him up again. My condolences to his family.

I am a retired RN who had the privilege of working with J. Jerry Rodos in the early 1970's at what was then Cranston General Hospital Osteopathic. He was also my and my children's physician. I always was thrilled when I was assigned to work with his patients. He was the most caring and thoughtful physician I ever worked with in my forty years of nursing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and coworkers. God Bless you Jerry and thank you for all your years of service.

Jerry was my mentor and a friend while at KCOS and actually met me at the train station in La Plata, MO 1958 and drove me back to the ATS House. He was a friend and a true Osteopathic Physician. He will be missed!

Jerry was a real friend and a wonderful person. We had many serious discussions but many times he would say to me "that is a discussion for another time". He was one of the hardest working physicians I have ever been associated with. We saw each other countless times on the weekends while seeing patients in the hospital. He had a very dry humor of which I was quite fond of. One of my fondest memories is the times I would drop off my daughter, Jacque, to their home, in which she would "baby sit" Adam when he was just a toddler. She was quite fond of Jerry, Joyce and Adam. My deepest condolences to Joyce and Adam.

The loss of such a great man to the world is moderated only by his gift of two wonderful children. RIP
