Kushen, Ivan Lewis

Ivan Lewis Kushen, of Highland Park, Illinois and Longboat Key, Florida, born August 10, 1935, passed away August 17, 2023. Son of the late Genevieve and Arthur Kushen. Beloved husband of Ellen Jones Kushen for 21 years until her death in 1979. Cherished husband of Marilyn Kushen for the past 39 years. The best father of Anne (Mitch) Macknin, Karen (Ed) Weil, Ali (Irv) Kagan, and Geoff Ruttenberg. The loved forever grandfather of Ellen (Max) McCarty, Lucy Behn, Charlie Weil, Rachel Weil, Sammy Kagan, Joey Kagan, and Benjamin Kagan. Great-grandfather of Asher McCarty. Dear brother of Richard (Arlene) Kushen and the late Barbara Kushen Dee, and brother-in-law of Richard (the late Jayne) Jones. Loving cousin and uncle to many. Lifelong devoted friend of countless people across the country. Ivan was a proud University of Michigan graduate and ZBT fraternity brother. He joined the family furniture company, Kushen Brothers Furniture, out of college and later became a leading sales representative of Schnadig International Furniture. Long-suffering White Sox and Bears fan, offset by the perennial powerhouse Wolverines football squad. Fast walker, fisherman, fun-loving friend, and grillmaster, Ivan had a sharp wit, an infectious laugh, a boundless loyalty to his family and friends, and an unwavering patriotism. His strength, wisdom, humor, and smile will be remembered forever. Memorial service Monday, August 21, 2023, 2:30 p.m., at North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 Sheridan Rd, Glencoe. I am thinking of Ivan and family and all those who loved him. Unfortunately, we lost David in November. I found Ivan's obituary on his desk. We loved him.

Ivan Kushen was a wonderful first cousin who was one of the first people I ever met! Our mothers were sisters, and when I was born we lived on the same block-the 5100 South Ingleside Street! He was seven when I was born, so he and his brother, Richard, were my most immediate cousins.
Ivan chose to attend the University of Michigan, then his brother followed him there, and I followed both of them.
Ivan was a terrific father, with lots of good humor and always a big smile.
I will miss him, and I know everyone who knew him eill miss him greatly.
May his memory be a blessing always!

I have memories of Ivan from Camp Indianola as I was one of the younger boys to which he was a kind and helpful mentor.

We have so many warm memories of Ivan. I knew him at Michigan as Ellen's roommate before they were married. We lived as neighbors when we were newly weds, and Ellen and Ivan were very much our family. Ellen's brother, Richard, was David;s roommate at Harvard. David and I met at Jayne and Dick's engagement party .Geographic distance prevented us seeing each other in recent years , but we loved Ivan very much and can still hear his laugh and see his smile. May his memory be a blessing. Phyllis and David Cook

So sorry for your loss. He was a great Dad, grandfather and new great grand father. Devoted to his wife. Devoted family man. Loved his laugh and laughter. He will be sorely missed, especially by his family. He will always be in your thoughts and hearts.

I met Ivan in 1953 on the train from Chicago to Ann Arbor. We became friends and roommates and for the next 70 years he was an important part of my life. I loved him. We were never together when we didn't experience laughter and joy. I thought of Ivan and Marilyn often. Because of geography, my living in Louisville and Ivan in Sarasota we really did not see each other as often as I would have wanted but the bond was always there. The pandemic caused me to cancel trips to see him in Florida but we always talked. Ivan was one of my closest friends. His passing will leave a permanent hole in my heart. My family all understood how special he was to me. Loyalty could have been his middle name. God bless my beloved " Russian". May he rest in well-deserved peace.
