Coach Marshal was my coach at Lane tech my senior year. He was a tremendous motivator and I learned a lot from him. Coach Marshall had a way to make you feel special, I remember showing up late for a meet and he made me swim every event from then on; that was my favorite meet ever. He was a great guy and was in the right profession.

My sincere condolensces on the passing of Ike Marshall....I just saw his obituary in the CTU Paper.....Ike and I go back to when he coached swimming at Foreman HS and I swam for Harrison....later, I coached against Ike(at Lane) for Kenwood in the boys City Championship.....he used to joke "Surbaugh, I've spent my whole career trying to beat you!!..."lol....he was a gentle GIANT(though not so gentle when he needed to be!!).....he also recommended me for his Swimming and Water Polo position when he retired from the Board....I will always remember his hearty LAUGH!!!.......Sincerely, Rick Surbaugh(Harrison, Class of 75)Teacher at Lawndale Academy

I was one of Mr. Marshall first Swim Team at Whitney Young. I could swim biut not to the style and professionalism of Mr. Marshall so he would use a pole to make sure my head stay in the water. I got better for it and have learned to appreciate him. He taught me humility and the love for the water, even in the cold of winter. Her will surely be missed as he was also a friend and a mentor.
Bless his family in this awful time.

This man was not just any coach but also a strong mentor. Through hard and awful times Mr. Marshall pushed me to be the best of me. He taught me to never give up in competition and never give up in life. It was often like he had a special sense for those who needed help and was always openhearted enough to give it. That, and always with a sense of humor. One year he actually fell into the pool with his electronic gear and business suit on. I think we might have all been silent for a moment but then he made his awesome hilarious sarcastic comments and we all couldn't help but laugh and of course scurry to see if he needed anything! And of course, he got right up and just kept going with the program. The man demanded our attention and always received it. Coach Marshall did so much good in his life. I'm sure he will be missed so much by many and I can just imagine his commentary from up above now :)

Our deepest condolences on the passing of Coach Marshall. He was such an incredible influence on me. We were part of the first team at Whitney Young. It was like a family. It is a testament to Coach that many of us remain close friends 30 years later. He taught so much about life as well as swimming. We won't soon forget him.

My condolences to the Marshall family. I was saddened to hear of Coach Marshall's passing. He was a very influential person in my time at Whitney Young. He was a coach and a mentor that taught the right values to his team. He always believed that you could do more than you thought you could which made you strive higher and achieve more. He taught the value that every member of the team is important. Even if you did not win, if you did your best and finished the race - you were a winner.
These special values helped motivate and guide me through the rest of high school, college, and grad school. I hope to now pass these basic beliefs onto my 14 month old son.
Coach Marshall was truely a special person. He will be missed by all he touched.

I know it hurts and you don't want to release, but remember he is now at peace. A man of integrity, that put his family first, leaving you guys probably hurt him worse. But our father called for him, he had to take the call, you have the memories rather big or small, just remember he loved you all.
I thank him for Kerris she's like a big sister to me, the strength he's guided her with she has guided me.

My condolences to the Marshall family. I am so saddened by this news that I really have no words to express how I will miss Mr. Marshall. I attended Lane from 1990 to 1995. Mr. Marshall was a wonderful teacher, mentor, and father figure to me. When I thought that there was no hope, he was there for me, pushing me to be all that I could be. I graduated half a year later than I should have, but I would not have graduated if Mr. Marshall wasn't there encouraging me and putting his faith in me. I am so thankful that I had the chance to have him in my life. Thank you Mr. Marshall. Thank you to the Marshall family for sharing him. He was a kind and generous person and will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. May you take comfort in the memories that you have. God bless.

Thanks for taking the time to show us how to swim at Michelle Clark Middle School on the Westside of Chicago in the summer of 1975. We were in awe of you, because of your imposing height, but you was the gentle giantand very helpful in teaching us the fundamentals of swimming. by you showing us how to swim correctly, I appreciated it more now as an adult. May you rest in peace and be a Lifeguard with Jesus.

There are very few words that can describe my heartache right now....my condolences to the Marshall Family. My name's Shaakira Hassell, I was a former swimmer of Lane Tech H.S where Mr. Marshall (Papa Ike...to me then) resided as not only my coach for 4 years but also my 2nd father figure. He was the shoulder that I leaned on for four years of my life and he helped me through some of the toughest of family times. He helped me to refocus my attention and energy towards something bigger than myself at the time...and during that time it was swimming for him and the rest of the LT squad. I won many team and individual championships under the guidance and leadership of him...and most of all ... I won his friendship and counsel....He will be greatly missed and forever treasured and loved....
Sincerely,
Shaakira A. Hassell
