Hugh Fullmer Obituary

Fullmer, Rev. Hugh

Reverend Hugh Fullmer, former pastor at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Aurora, passed away peacefully at home in Fontana, WI on Friday, March 1, 2024. He was 77 years old.

Reverend Hugh Fullmer was born on August 20, 1946, in Evanston, IL. He attended Immaculate Conception Grade School, Elmhurst,

Quigley Preparatory Seminary, Chicago, and Lewis University, Romeoville where he received a B.A. in Philosophy, and attended the seminary at Conception Abbey in Missouri and St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana.

Father Fullmer was ordained to the priesthood on November 18, 1972, by Bishop Romeo Blanchette at St. Isaac Jogues Church, Hinsdale. He served the Diocese of Joliet where he was Associate

Pastor at St. Isaac Jogues, Hinsdale (1972-1976); Holy Ghost, Wood Dale (1976-1981); St. Alexander, Villa Park (1981-1986); St. Peter the Apostle, Itasca (1986-1988). Father served as Pastor of St. Joseph, Lockport (1988-2000); and retired as Pastor from Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Aurora (2000-2017).

It was the joy of his life to serve the Church as a priest. Alongside that deep love and devotion to the family of God, he was passionate about his extended family. He enjoyed traveling the world, but he often retreated to Abbey Springs for respite during his ministry and was delighted to retire there. He fell asleep with hopes of moving into his new home with life-long friend, Fr. John Clemens, resting comfortably under his Packer's blanket. He awoke to the glorious splendor of eternity promised by his Savior, which is even more beautiful than Lake Geneva.

Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marie (Nee Guirsch), and his brothers, Paul and Mel (Moose).

Survived by his two sisters-in-law, Sandra and Sharyl, three nieces, Allison and Monica Fullmer, and Joanie (Leaf) Zwerling; one nephew, David (Delena) Fullmer. He is also survived by 10 grand nieces and nephews and 8 great grand nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Hesed House 659 S. River St. Aurora, IL 60506, or Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church Building Fund 701 S. Eola Rd, Aurora, IL 60504. Father Fullmer's body will lie in state at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 701 S Eola Rd, Aurora, IL 60504 on Thursday, March 14th from 3-8pm, with a Vigil Service being held at 7pm in the church. We were very sad to learn of the passing of Father Hugh Fullmer. My wife, Sharon, and I were very pleased to have Father Hugh serve as our Pastor on Sundays at Sharon, Wisconsin. Father Hugh said Masses at St. Catherine Church and area churches until his passing. We were very fortunate to have him with our parish family. He was truly a fine priest and welcomed all who attended. Father Hugh was very knowledgeable of the Bible and well traveled to many places in the world. These journeys became the source of many stories that he would include as part of his homilies. Father's message was always faith filled, meaningful, and had an injection of his keen sense of humor. We enjoyed going to Mass each Sunday-Father Hugh made you feel glad that you came. Father Hugh was very kind to small children who came to Mass and he would give them his trade mark Smile and hand them a cookie or brownie treat for the road. May Father enjoy his rewards in Heaven with the Lord whom he served so well during his time with on earth.. Father Hugh will be missed and long remembered for all that he meant to so many.

One of Fr. Hugh's passions was marriage enrichment through the Marriage Encounter movement. Hugh dedicated countless hours to prepping and presenting himself in a team environment to couples of all ages and faiths. We became friends and one of our lasting memories is Fr Hugh's welcoming of children. He delivered "Zerbits" to all the kids once they warmed to this big teddy bear. Fr. Hugh challenged the heirarchy during some difficult times but never lost sight of his mission to care for those who God sent his way. He was a lover and a hugger! RIP.

Favorite memories with Fr. Hugh
We met Fr. Hugh the day after he moved into the rectory at OLM. My then seven year old son had stolen a Pokeman card from a friend. I dragged my son to the rectory for confession. Afterward the pair came out smiling and laughing like old friends.
During Advent 2004 Fr. Hugh, Fr. Allam, and I took my kiddos to see the Polar Express. My youngest son was 6 at the time. He and Fr. Allam sat side by side sharing popcorn. Fr. Hugh and I spent much of the movie watching the two of them. They were each wearing the same expression of awe and joy! It was a perfect afternoon!
Parish picnics.
MercyFest!
And of course going to the lake!

Fr. Hugh was an integral part of my childhood at Holy Ghost School. I was part of his 1st conformation class and he always had a special place for us. Our class even took a field trip to his condo in Lake Geneva. The Holy Ghost family has always been around for all of his events. He was able to come to my wedding reception and said the prayer before dinner. He was such a nice all around person and we will miss him dearly, but he is now with the God that he served for many years.

Hugh chaperoned and took us to The Feast of The Virgin Mary in Melrose Pk, IL, a community festival still celebrated today. I beleive that was my first "Street Fest." Very fond memories being part of that group! Fr. Hugh popsitively impacted many!

Fr. "Hug" was at St. Isaac Jogues during my middle school years and was a beloved member of that community. We had the blessing of having him attend our 50th reunion in September, 2023. Great stories were shared filled with laughter and love. He will be missed.

Fr. Hugh was kind enough to come over and bless my new residence in Williams Bay this winter.
On occasion, I would have the privilege to dine and converse with Fr. Hugh regarding the plethora of religious issues presently facing our Catholic faith, as well as soliciting his opinions relative to our nations Bishops and the Pope. His perspectives were ones demonstrating time & quality reflection, always respectful, thoughtfully discussed, extremely interesting and, without exception, most informative. Definitely, this remarkable servant of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith is presently with our Lord and Savior.
All this, plus Dr. Hugh was a huge Chicago Blackhawk fan, which generated fun, light sports conversation in addition to the serious discussions. Most certainly, he will be truly missed by all who knew him and who considered him a treasured friend. He was a remarkable blessing to all of us. May God rest his soul and welcome him into heaven with open arms.

We were known as the "God Squad at Majestic Oaks Golf course in Delavan, WI.
Every Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. the "God Squad" would tee off. Fr. High, Richard Tuma, Frank Bucaro and when he could make it, Fr. Klem. We'd then have a beer and solve the world's problems! I will miss my friend. Until we meet again Hugh!!

Father Hugh was such a large part of my In-laws lives and became a very special person to me too.
He was there to Christen our children, bless us at special events and most recently be with us for my husband's funeral. God blessed us for many years with him.

He was instrumental in opening the doors for us to serve and minister at OLM. He was our guest of honor at the debut celebration of our only daughter and usually blesses our whole family. Always smiling and accommodating.
