Hubert Martin Obituary

MONTREAL (AP) - Hubert "Pit" Martin, a four-time NHL All-Star in the 1960s and '70s, has died. He was 64.

Martin was presumed dead after his snowmobile plunged into an icy lake Sunday, Quebec provincial police said. Divers were trying to recovery his body.

Martin played 1,101 NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks, amassing 809 points from 1963 to 1979.

Martin was part of one of the biggest blockbuster trades in hockey history in 1967 when he and two other players were shipped to Chicago in the deal that made Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield part of a Bruins dynasty.

He won the Masterton Trophy for sportsmanship and perseverance in 1969-70, his first of three 30-goal campaigns. He had a career-high 90 points in 1972-73 with the Blackhawks.

Dear Martin Family,

My condolences to All of You. Over the last 11 months I have read of so many great memories of Mr. Martin with family, friends, and acquaintances. Although, never meeting Mr. Martin, I have spent much of my youth admiring him, along with the Chicago Blackhawks team. They have all been very impressionable to me and my family. On my 40th birthday I received a blank, white Blackhawk jersey as my primary gift. My family knew of my deep love of hockey and the Blackhawks. It has been nearly 10 years now that I have slowly pondered whose name and number to pride myself with on this jersey. Much thought and research had went into this, for which I had a strict criteria. My final decision is now #7, Pit Martin. I will be wearing it with pride to all the future Blackhawk games that I attend. May All of You cherish Your memories with Mr. Martin. God Bless.

My deepest condolences to the Martin family. I started liking hockey in 1962 when my hometown Hamilton Red Wings led by Pit won the Memorial Cup. Pit was my favorite player throughout his entire career in the juniors and the pros. One of my dreams was to someday meet Pit and express how much joy he gave me for so many years which unfortunately now will never happen. I was devastated when I heard about his accident. The memories that a child has stays with them vividly for their entire life and you will always be remembered Pit. God Bless you in heaven and your family.

To the Martin Family,

My deepest sympathy, our family had season tickets to the Hawk's in the 60's and 70's and I so much loved watching Pit lead a charge down ice.
I'm sure he really would have loved being at the Winter Classic on New Years Day at Wrigley Field or watching on tv.

To Pit's siblings and his immediate and extended family:

Please accept my sincere condolences on Pit's tragic passing. I was so shocked and saddened when I turned on the TV on December 1st to hear "Breaking News: Pit Martin Feared Dead" and to later hear confirmation that Pit had, in fact, perished in the waters of Lac Kanasuta. Pit's passing brought back so many memories from years ago.

Some of Pit's siblings will remember my mother, Blanche Bienvenu Hogan who was a nursing-school classmate and life-long friend of Pit's mother "Mrs. Martin".

Mrs. Martin visited my mother every year until the 80's when my mom became quite ill with heart disease. She battled heart disease for four years until her death in 1985.

I have very fond memories of Mrs. Martin's visits when I was growing up in Kazabazua, QC. I also have wonderful memories of the fabulous packages she sent to our home full of clothes which were of designer-calibre. We were so excited when a package arrived from Mrs. Martin! They were probably clothes which Joelle and Andre had outgrown but we were ecstatic to receive them! What a talented seamstress Mrs. Martin was!

In the summer of 1962, I visited relatives in New Liskeard, ON and Haileybury, ON. I also managed to get to Noranda. I am not sure how I got there but I presume I took the bus from New Liskeard. I enjoyed the warm Martin hospitality. Pit was less than one year older than me. I recall chatting with him and we exchanged news about our very different activities. Pit was very involved in hockey and would soon join the NHL. He was very pleasant and down-to-earth. I did not have an opportunity to meet Pit again after our visit in 1962. I was proud, however, to tell my friends about my connection with Pit. My mom kept me up-to-date with all the Martin family news. Pit was incredibly talented in so many ways. Friends who followed hockey much more closely than I did used to rave about Pit's skating and playmaking excellence.

Mrs. Martin phoned me here in Toronto in the mid-70's. If memory serves me correctly, she was returning to Noranda after babysitting Pit's children.

I note from reading Pit's obituary in The Windsor Star that Mrs. Martin and Arlette are not mentioned so I assume they have passed on. God Bless.

I would like to try to attend the celebration of Pit's life in Windsor in the spring. I would appreciate if one of you would inform me after the date has been determined. I would also love to hear from any one of you with an update of your whereabouts, etc. I have not heard anything since before about 1983. E-mail: [email protected]

You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,
Anita

Dear Pat,
I sincerely send my condolences to you and your daughters. I read about Pit's death on line recently. You may or may not remember me, but Geri Matyasek and I use to babysit for you and Pit when you lived in Villa Park, Illinois. Geri and I actually flew up with Pit in his plane to your Windsor house one summer back in 1973. I know your girls are all grown up and I am sure still as gorgeous as they were as tots. You are all in my prayers. Dawn ([email protected])

Our condolences to the Martin families on such an unforseen tragedy. Pit played in Hamilton for my dad (Jim Skinner) & I remember my dad always commenting on what a terrific player he was as well as a gentleman. "One of the best all round players" who will go far in the NHL which he did! We have some pics of him in my dad's hockey memorbilia. Again, a real loss! Sincerely, Skinner family

So sorry to hear this news. My dad and I went to many games at the old Stadium in the 70's and Pit Martin was my favorite hawk.
I had my Mom sew a #7 on my plain blackhawks jersey, and I wore it proudly. God bless his family. We will never forget him.

As a kid growing up in the era that Pit played with the Blackhawks, I truly loved and embraced that team. I will always remember Pit and the majority of his teamates. Altough the team never won the Stanley Cup, I will always remember them as one of the greatest sports team I had the honor of watching and rooting for. My thoughts & prayers go out to the entire Martin family. Thanks for all the great memories Pit, I am sure you will be sorely missed.

To the Pit Martin family:
My best friend Gail Genovese Smith & myself would like to extend our deepest condolences to you on the loss of Pit. Pat, we had many a drink together in between periods and I always found you guys along with Sue Hull and Cindy Magnuson to be very down to earth, fun people to be around not to mention highly accessible to the fans. Pit was a great guy, fantastic hockey player and he will be missed by all Blackhawk fans everywhere not to mention his family & friends. We don't go to the games anymore as my mom is 92 now and suffered a stroke in January, but she always loved watching him play. If she could, she would extend her sympathies too. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad time.
