Hubert Edfors Obituary

Edfors, Hubert C. "Hugh"

Hubert C. "Hugh" Edfors, 89, a 57- year resident of Naperville and former resident of Chicago, IL, died Thursday, April 11, 2024, in his home by his wife's side. Hugh was the only child born on June 12, 1934, to Evelyn Edfors (nee Schmidt), and Herbert C. Edfors. The young family built a house in Maywood and that's where Hugh grew up. Hugh attended the University of Illinois and earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and finished his master's degree in industrial engineering in 1961. Hugh utilized his degrees and also did a considerable amount of work in electrical engineering. He became a Failure Analysis Reliability Engineer and founded his own consulting firm called Rel-Tek Engineering. Hugh was also a proud life member of the IEEE, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Hugh met his wife, Jacqueline Y. Van Duys at a dance and married her on April 25, 1964. One of Hugh's passions was for classic cars, preferably Studebakers and Avanti's which he collected over the years. He joined many car clubs, participated in many car shows, and sold his last Avanti to an enthusiast who lives in New Zealand. His love of classical music was shared with his wife and they were regular patrons of Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. They were longtime members of the Hinsdale Chapter of Lyric Opera, which hosts many fundraisers to the benefit of Lyric. Hugh is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Y Edfors nee Van Duys. His children, Yvonne Marie (nee Edfors) Hammond (husband Michael J. Hammond), and Paul Hubert Edfors (wife Maria Alcira Rincon). He was grandfather to Kurt S. Hammond, Bradley P. Hammond and Janelle L. Hammond. Visitation will take place from 4pm-8pm Tuesday, April 16th at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL 60540. The Funeral Service will take place at 10am on Wednesday, April 17th at the funeral home. The Reverend Elisabeth Pynn Himmelman will officiate. Interment will take place at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleums, 1400 S. Wolf Rd. Hillside, IL 60162.

I knew Hugh through the Studebaker and Avanti Car Clubs in the Chicago area. Since meeting Hugh in 2011 at a meeting, I´ve considered him a fellow car enthusiast, friend, mentor and the consummate gentleman. We traveled together to many states attending Studebaker and Avanti meets, the longest trip being a 2015 tour of Route 66 from IL to Santa Monica CA. I will greatly miss Hugh´s easy going personality, financial advice, car recollections, quick wit, sense of humor and enthusiasm for life. Condolences to Hugh´s wife Jackie, children and grandchildren for their loss.

What an absolute pleasure connecting with Cousin Hugh and Jackie since moving out to the area! I have never met such an intelligent man who could converse in a wide range of topics! I very much enjoyed gathering family history and pictures for posterity - HE was the man who Really knew our family history in detail!
Although we knew each other for too short of a time, I feel very Blessed to have Hugh and Jackie as Family.
This is not goodbye, but merely a farewell for now.
See you next time, Cousin Hugh!!
