In calling for an appointment today, I learned of the passing of Dr. Melam. I cannot express to you how saddened I was to hear this news.
Twenty years ago, I came into his office with three asthmatic children. Through his medical expertise, he treated their illness and taught them how to achieve and maintain a healthy quality of life and to a young mother, he offered encouragement. Dr. Melam always made time to return a phone call and spared an extra minute to add a personalized moment. What he offered truly went well beyond medicine. His caring and compassionate nature extended to each individual, invoking a smile or laugh with his tenderness and humor.
As I do, I am sure that all people he met have stories deep within themselves that will keep his memory alive for many years to come. Erin, Ryan and Shannon have grown into their twenties with the ability to accept and take control of their asthma and allergies. It has been in meeting him that I have grown. Because of knowing him we have been blessed and we have yet another reason to smile.
To you and your loved ones, I offer my heartfelt sympathy.

To the family of Dr. Melam, you have my deepest sympathy. My son
Joseph has been apatient of Dr. Melam for the past 30 years. Joseph
is on vacation in Lake Tahoe. He was having weezing problems and
called Dr. Melams office only to hear that passed away. He was
a wonderful Doctor. I always wished he could have been our
family doctor. He was NEVER to busy to call you back even if it was
just for a prescription. My son was very sick as a young child. Dr.
Melam always calmed my fears. Words can never express how much
he will be missed. He was a great Doctor and a wonderful person.

First of all, my deepest sympathy to Howard's children and their spouses. Also, to his sister, his nieces, his ex-wife adn cousins.
I knew Howard for about nine years, during those nine years he managed to make my whole family fall in love with him. He was always interested in the life of my nephew, his wife and two children. He cared for them deeply.
My nephew remembers his sense of humor and waht a great time we all shared with Howard.
I have lost a great friend, probably the kind of friendship that only comes once in a lifetime, but Howard will continue to live in our hearts and in our fond memories of him.
Thank you Howard for your friendship, sense of humor and unlimited ability to care for so many people. We can all learn so much from Howard's disposition.
I will miss you dearest friend.

Howard was truly one of the finest men we have ever met. We have known him for 23 years, since one of our sons needed treatment. As our four children became adults he followed their lives with a most sincere interest. He would ask about school, friends, sports and activities and as they got older, jobs and dates. He would encourage them and tease them, always with a twinkle in his eye.
There was never any doubt that he was sincere and genuinely cared about all of us.
We will always remember him.

My sympathies to Dr. Melam's family and colleagues in his allergy practice. He was a great allergist and a compassionate physician. I will miss seeing him in the office when my allergies and sinuses don't behave! Even though my medical problems are minor in comparison to many of his patients, he always treated me with the same level of competency and concern. He will be missed by many.

We were all so sad to learn of the loss of such a wonderful man. As my Doctor who saved me so many times when I had strange allergic reactions, as a client whom I had the honor of photographing over the years with all his family and friends who adored him... and as a man who couldn't help but to become your friend..... we will sure miss you. I hope that through my photographs of Howard, generations of his family that will not get the privilege that we all had, will be able to feel the warmth and comfort that his smile brought to all that have known him. Our sincere condolences go out to his entire family.

I gasped when a read about this in this morning's Daily Herald. My son was only 4 years old when Dr. Melam started his treatment for allergies. He used to come in with a skunk puppet, and Dr. Melam always treated him with humor and kindness. I felt safe knowing he was always out there somewhere should we need him again. Our family will miss that security, and him. Our sympathies to his family and staff. The Zyskowski Family

Wherever do I begin to put into words what this remarkable person, and dedicated physician has meant to so many? I first met Dr. Melam when my son, Matthew, suffered from a severe episode of asthma. I could not have placed my son in better hands, for all of those years. It was not until the early 1970's, when I was a young nurse, that I experienced something I will never forget. I was working in Pediatrics at Resurrection Hospital, when a 15 month old baby was admitted to the service of Dr. Melam. I watched while this most unique and dedicated physician sat at the bedside of this ill child, coordinated his transfer to Children's and drove along with the ambulance to make certain this small human being arrived safely and was stable. I have one regret, and that is I saw this notice late this evening and missed attending the service earlier today. The care and dedication Dr. Melam demonstrated for my child, and the
children of others, is something unique to this wonderful man. He will live in our hearts forever, along with the impact he made on our lives. I remember a needlepoint (as I recall) that hung in his office which said "Happiness is having Howard home." He told me Sandra made this for him. I am sure now God is saying the same. Thank you for all you were to all of us and all you did!! To the family of Dr. Melam, I would like to send my sincere condolences.

My friend Howard Melam's early office on Schaumburg Road was just down the street from my pediatric office in the 1970s, & I often referred my patients to him for consultation. He was a distinguished associate as well as a competent physician, and will be missed greatly by all who knew and worked with him.

I was so saddened to see on the Chicago Tribune website of Dr. Melam's death. In 1974, my daughter, Deborah Bell, had an acute asthma attack, and was rushed to Lutheran General Hospital. Dr. Melam treated her so diligently and lovingly. I have always believed that he saved her life, as her pediatritian told us she may die. She was in intensive care for 4 days. Dr. Melam was our allergist from that day on, and I grew to love him as a doctor. My deepest sympathies to your family. Fondly, Carol Bell
