Herbert Nipson Obituary

Nipson, Herbert 95 retired executive editor of Ebony Magazine. Herbert Nipson was the executive editor at Ebony Magazine from 1972 until his retirement in 1987. He joined the editorial staff of Ebony in 1949. Mr. Nipson was an honored distinguished alumnus of Penn State University where he received a degree in journalism in 1940. As an undergraduate, in 1939, Mr. Nipson was the first African-American elected to Sigma Delta Chi, the national journalism honor society. After serving in the U.S. Army during WWII, he received an MFA in creative writing from The University of Iowa, which also honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus. During Mr. Nipson's tenure at Ebony, the magazine covered the civil rights struggle and cultural issues important to African-Americans, issues often ignored by the national press. He received the Capitol Press Club's outstanding journalist award in 1965. Herbert Nipson was an avid photographer and art collector. He served as director and board member for the South Side Community Arts Center in Chicago. He also served for many years as a member of the Illinois Arts Council and the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee for Chicago theatrical productions. His many friends will remember him for his patience and good humor. Mr. Nipson moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico after the death of his wife Velvin C. Nipson in 2002 and, until this year, enjoyed summers in Cambridge, Massachusetts with his son's family. Herbert Nipson is survived by two sisters Martha Nipson and Elizabeth Seitz, his children Herbert E. and Maria F. Nipson, two grandchildren Kyra and Theron Nipson, and many friends and colleagues who love and miss him.

My condolences to the Nipson family. His example is an inspiration to all to never let obsticles derail your goals, help others along the way, and that giving always brings greater happiness than receiving (Acts 20:35).

To all who knew Herb. He was an astute manager of a stable of journalists during many turbulent episodes in the maturity of civil humanism in this country. A wise, and gentle soul who has been loved by many of his protegees, like me.
