POUGHKEEPSIE - Brother Henderson Murphy was born on April 15, 1915 in Sampson County, NC. He closed his eyes to a peaceful rest on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at home. Brother Murphy was a fifty five year resident of Poughkeepsie, NY and a member of Galilee Pentecostal Church of Poughkeepsie. He was a caretaker and father to many. Brother Murphy was the son of the late Jimmy Murphy and Stella Henry.
On November 30, 1941 he married the love of his life the late Mary Lily Elam. Left to cherish his memory are three sons, Roger"Bobby" Murphy Sr. of Poughkeepsie, Jimmy Murphy of Fayetteville, NC and Roger"Puddin" Murphy Jr of Poughkeepsie; one daughter, Mattie Jackson of Forestville, MD; brother, J.T. Murphy and wife Rose of Teaneck, NJ and two daughters-in-law, Doris and Pauline. Brother Murphy also survived by sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, long with devoted nieces,nephews,other relatives and many friends. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Lily Murphy;son, Henderson"Baby" Murphy Jr and a great grandchild.
Visitation 10am-11am Thursday January 5, 2012 at Beulah Baptist Church 92 Catharine Street, Poughkeepsie, NY. Services 11am at the church. Reverend Martin Boone Pastor of Galilee Pentecostal Church officiating. Interment at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie. Gone too soon. Mr. Murphy was a real one. Always kind in demeanor and engagement. Was an icon on Smith Street and without his house there it´s not the same!
