On Halloween, our family lost its matriarch. Our beautiful, sweet, funny, and loving Grandma Sagel took her final breaths at home, in her own bed, with my brother Edward Sagel and sister Lynda VanDyck by her side and Glenn Miller playing in the background. A perfect ending for a wonderful life!
She lived the most amazing life...102 years and 4 months. Her memory was perfect and she was sharp as a tack until the very end. I loved hearing her stories and I'm so grateful that I have some on tape. If you are my friend you've heard stories about Grandma...I always had to do her little polish voice. I just couldn't help myself!
We will all miss her so much but we know how blessed we were for having her in our life for so long. It will truly be a celebration of life this weekend when we gather together.
I want to honor and thank my siblings, Lynda, Susan, and Eddie for the loving care they gave to her in her final weeks and days. Kathy-Jo and I were there in spirit I love you all so much!
Now here they are. Grandma's secrets to longevity:
1. She NEVER had a driver's license. She lived in the Chicago neighborhood of Brighton Park until she was 89 years old WITH her family. She WALKED everywhere, to the store, church, bank, beauty parlor, etc... She never went to a gym or owned a treadmill. It was unintentional exercise just by LIVING. Even in her condo, she would walk back and forth because she knew she HAD to keep moving.
2. Quaker oatmeal every morning.
3. Black coffee (preferably Dunkin Donuts )
4. Real homecooked food...fruits, vegetables (she was so sad when she could no longer eat salad)
4. Her Catholic Faith and belief
5. Music!!!
6. Most important... a generous, forgiving, positive spirit and the love and support of those around her
I love you and I'll miss you, Grandma. I'll see you again in Paradise!
Love, Deedee
