Harvey Walner Obituary

Walner, Harvey L.

Harvey L. Walner, 88, of Chicago, ringer for Robert Redford, founder of Harvey L. Walner & Associates Ltd. in 1973 where he pioneered the use of television advertising, former President of Hillcrest Country Club where his short game made up for his mediocre drives, owner of more sportscoats than Ultimo had to offer while always a bit obsessed with his own blond locks (which to the jealousy of all humankind never faded), passed away on February 2, 2025. Beloved husband of Barbara (nee Friedman), who first ogled him at Oak Street Beach in 1959 and was bowled over by his warmth and humor. Loving father to Jonathan (Julie) Walner, Dana Walner (Dean) Anderson and the late Keith Walner. Took special pride in being a grandfather of Tony (fiancé Sarah Weiss), Joey, Tatum, Isabelle and Chase, as well as a devoted friend and uncle to many, many nieces and nephews. Known for his huge personality and clever nicknames for his countless friends and associates, he will be greatly missed by all (who will now be one spot higher in both the best-dressed and general handsomeness rankings). Service Tuesday 12PM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 199 Water Street, 11th Floor, New York, New York 10038, www.afsp.org. To Jon and the Walner family, My sincere condolences on the passing of Mr. Walner. He was a colorful, strong, humorous, helpful and great presence. I remember working for HLW & Associates (when on 230 W Monroe) in the early 1990's and enjoyed my time there. I was so shocked to see this but I am sending my thoughts and prayers out to the Walner family at this time of great loss. Mr. Walner was one of a kind! He is now with Keith though. May he rest in peace.

Barbara, John, Dana, Julie, and Dean,
Lynn and I send our sincere condolences on the death of Harvey. He was an amazing person. It was a pleasure to know and work with Harvey and Barbara, and to get to know the wonderful children they raised, and the great people those children married.
He was proud of all of you, and his grandchildren. You were all a blessing to him in his life, may his memory be a blessing in yours.
Best wishes

Dear Barbara,
So sorry to hear about Harvey. I have very fond memories of our time at Hillcrest & the fun shows we were in together. May his memory be for a blessing.

My sincere condolences to the entire Walner Family. Harvey is a legend, in advertising, in profession, in character, grit & personal strength, and also in natural charm! Harvey was a pioneer who blasted the doors open for attorneys in advertising. Through his efforts to reach people in need, and then to give them superb legal representation, he and his firm were able to help thousands who were adversely affected by injury! Harvey was a tough man who was quite confident in his judge of character, and in order to be accepted by Harvey, you had to pass his stringent acid test. "Are you exceptional at what you do? How can you prove that to me, quickly? Can you prove that you are a person to be trusted? And of course, do you keep yourself in good shape?" Once being accepted into Harvey´s inner-circle, you always felt that if you ever needed anything, Harvey would be there to help you, and to stand shoulder-to broad shoulder with you, to support you. Not only was he a fantastic businessman, a wonderful husband & family man, but also, he was a powerfully loyal friend. You always felt energy and excitement around Harvey, it was just natural. To Jon Walner, Harvey´s beautiful wife Barbara, and the entire Walner family, the good lord has gained a valuable asset, who isn´t shy, and one who adds another shining light in Heaven! God Bless You Harvey, may you rest in peace, you will be missed!

Sincerely,

John A. Zelenika
