Harold Newchurch Obituary
Passed away on January 13, 2021 after a short illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Wilma Newchurch, Daughters Carmeleeta, Lolita, Sons Darryl (Pamela), Evan (Rochelle), Everett (LaShawn), Ted (Joyce), God-daughter Rachel (Ray), Sister Portia, Brother-In-Law Richard Evans, loads of grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, cousins and a tremendous amount of friends and relatives. Visitation Friday 4 pm to 7 pm at Cage Memorial Chapel, 7651 S. Jeffery Blvd., 60649. Visitation Saturday at 10 am with Private Funeral service at 11 am at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 4501 S. Vincennes Ave., 60653. Harold was the first African American in the Sports Department at the Chicago Sun Times for 43 years as a Handicapper.

Harold was a mainstay at the Sun-Times sports department before I arrived there. I stayed 41 years and Harold was one of the very best people I've ever known.

So sorry to hear about Harold, truly one of the good guys. I had the pleasure of working with Harold at the Sun-Times from 1980-2011. Despite the constant pressure of making nightly deadlines, Harold was always cool, calm and collected. He had a great sense of humor, too. Wilma, God bless you and your family.

Harold worked on the Sun-Times sports desk when I started my 41 year career there in 1969. He was a wonderful guy, a great teammate, a true professional and a very good friend. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. We all lost a terrific guy.

Deacon Harold Newchurch was a warm and wise man. He had a laid-back aura that put anyone in his presence at ease. A person that was a wealth of information and eager to share. Deacon, you will be truly missed. Many blessings to the Newchurch and Person families.
