Dear Jane and Family,
Duffy and I were so terribly sorry to hear about ADM Stoecklein's passing. He was such a dynamic and proactive person all of his life and his positive attitude made him appear so youthful and vital. We felt sad to hear the news.
I will always remember him as a fine, intelligent gentleman who knew how to get things done in a diplomatic manner. Most of all I will remember him as my favorite CO and a wonderful friend. My thoughts are with all of you.
Sent with prayers and affection, Eileen and Duffy Hutton

The first senior military officer I had personal contact with on my return to the United States after my extended stay at the Hanoi Hilton was RADM. Stoecklein.
He was there to greet all the returning Vietnam POWs to Balboa Naval Hospital. After a hearty handshake and a smile that wouldn't stop, he asked me if there was any- thing he could do for me. I was a little taken back by the question, but laughingly said give me a liberty pass so I can go to Happy Hour at Miramar. He was not able to do that since we were all in medical quarantine until we were cleared by our doctors.
However he made amends shortly thereafter by inviting me to be his guest at one of the medical balls that was approaching. He said the uniform was mess dress. I told him, I would not be able to attend because I did not have anything but the uniforms they gave me in the Philippines. He said "don't worry I will take care of everything."
About two days later I opened the closet door in my room and there, neatly hanging right in front of me was a comlpete tux that fit me perfectly, even the shoes.
For the rest of my stay at the hospital and for many years thereafter, I enjoyed the pleasure of the company of the Stoecklein family.
Herb will be remembered by all of us in the Navy family as a man of honor, integrity and great compassion.
Most sincerely,
Duffy Hutton

Dear Stoecklein Family,
Please accept condolences on behalf of the O'Donnell family. We were terribly sorry to hear of Herb's passing. I have many memories of the Stoecklein's and the O'Donnells at parties on La Jolla Farms Road. Herb was was an amazing person; so full of joy and laughter and he gave tirelessly to this community.
I spoke with Mom on the phone and she sends her deepest sympathy. She is living in Mexico and would love for any or all of you to visit her. Her telephone number is 011-52-646-154-2178.
I am so sorry that I will be unable to attend Herb's Memorial Service but please know that my heart and my prayers are with you all.
I know Herb and Dad are having a grand time together where angels from earth are reacquainted in heaven.
Sincerely
Ti (O'Donnell) Howe
