Guy Toombes Obituary

Guy Ralph Toombes, Jr. Tony 1/23/1925~10/2/2006 Our beloved Guy died peacefully of heart failure, surrounded by his loving family, on Oct. 2, 2006 in Salt Lake City.' He was born in Spokane, Wash. to Blanche Greenough and Guy Ralph Toombes, Sr. The family moved to Salt Lake City in 1935 when his father was asked to manage the Hotel Utah. Tony, as his family called him, grew up with two adoring sisters and parents who tolerated his busy and adventurous activities. He attended East High School and Westminster College. During World War II, he served with the 492nd Bomb Group of the 8th Army Air Force, stationed out of North Pickenham, England. His section was used primarily for carrying OSS soldiers into occupied areas of Europe and dropping them behind enemy lines to work with the undergrounds of those countries. They also performed diversionary bombing runs to draw enemy resistance towards them instead of the RAF. After the war, Guy earned a Bachelors Degree in Hotel Management from Cornell University, where he was a member of Chi Psi Fraternity. He married Martha Ann Chapman in The Cathedral Church of St. Mark in Salt Lake City on July 9, 1949, a marriage that lasted 57 years and produced two sons: Guy Ralph Toombes III and Gleed Greenough Toombes. A salesman for most of his life, Guy maintained an exceptional work ethic throughout his professional career, always placing the client's interests first. He was happiest developing his own business from his home, which he did until his death. Guy was known and loved among family and friends for the humor and fun he brought to any social gathering. He was well read and had a broad range of interests and talents. He will be remembered for his sly smile, the twinkle in his eyes, his modesty and honesty. He was a member of Hidden Valley Country Club for many years where he and M.A. enjoyed golf. He played tennis regularly with a group of lifelong friends. He is survived by his wife, son Guy III, son Gleed and his wife Mary, Yvette Toombes Bobbio and sister Ann Toombes Healy. He was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Toombes McGee. Funeral services will be held Sat. Oct. 7, 2006 at 2 p.m. at The Cathedral Church of St. Mark, 231 E. 100 So., Salt Lake City. Contributions in Guy's name may be made to the Humane Society of Utah, 4242 So. 300 West, Murray, Ut. 84107 or to the charity of your choice.

To MA and all of Guy's friends,
I met Guy in the original Staker group on Saturday mornings at Hidden Valley.

I often ran into Guy in the late afternoon, and would walk nine and talk about everything.

Guy was a hero to me and I told him so. He never failed to enjoy his work, his golf and everyone he knew.

I saw Guy at the range the last Saturday of his life working on his game. I think everyone would like to live a life like Guy did . . . punching his fun card till the end!

MA, Guy and Gleed loosing him must be very difficult, however, knowing and having him in your lives must have been great. My thoughts and warm sympathies are with you.

MA, Guy and Gleede
I knew Guy only on the tennis court and at social functions, but I liked and admired him for the integrity and honesty that shaped every word he spoke and every thing he did.
I don't believe that he wasted a day of his life, nor that there was a day of his life wherein he failed to bring love to his family and pleasure to his friends.
You can't do much better with a life than that.
Alan

Guy was one of the first people I played with when I joined Hidden Valley and his locker was next to mine. He was a genuinely kind and warm person always saying hello and asking how things were going. His passing is a loss to all.
