George Beary Obituary

Beary, George

Born In 1943 on the South Side of Chicago to Mary and George Beary. He grew up in Visitation Parish and graduated from De La Salle High School in 1961. He was blessed with two thoughtful and loving sisters: Diane (Dr. Michael Stefancic) and Barbara (Robert Victorine). Uncle George was loved by his nieces and nephews. He felt the responsibility to instill in them the qualities he believed were necessary for life- how to attach a worm to a hook, debone a turkey breast, and the art of making a proper fist to protect their thumbs (if the need ever arose!) George was also a loyal brother in-law, friend and colleague to many. He always made sure you were taken care of. If you needed him, you could find him every Friday on his favorite stool at Schaller's Pump (where his nephews were forbidden to go). George followed his dream and became a Chicago firefighter in 1967; serving 38 years on the force and advancing to the position of Engineer until his retirement in 2005. He was also active with Local 2 for 55 years serving as Vice President and Chairman of the Retiree's Board. During his terms, he established the health insurance plans for the retirees and their families, planned and hosted get togethers, and was involved with lawsuits to improve the quality of life for retired firefighters. George and the love of his life Sheri (Litviak) were married for 34 years and when he became a father his life was complete. He adored his daughter Samantha and she him. Sam and Sheri lovingly cared for George during his illness. With hearts breaking and tears flowing they held him in their arms as he entered eternal life on July 30th. Visitation Thursday from 3:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at Curley Funeral Home, 6116 W. 111 th Street, Chicago Ridge; Family and friends will gather directly Friday at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 6424 S. Kilbourn, Chicago for a visitation at 9:15 a.m. until time of Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery, Justice. George was my first engineer. Always stood up for the ff´s in the house, for the union and for the retires. He will be missed.

Very sad to learn that George had passed away. We were friends for 74 years. Both us were born at 5700 S. Emerald. That friendship lasted so long because George made it so. The most loyal friend I ever had. A true and bold to the bone, Chicago Fireman. Rest now George your suffering is done.

I was a friend of George´s since grammar school. We shared a lot of good times together, for the last couple years he was joining us for the Vis Kids luncheon. He found a lot of friends there mostly retired fireman, but also guys he grew up with.
