Fred Hillbruner Obituary

Hillbruner, Fred A. passed away November 15, 2004, at Evanston Hospital. Art Librarian and Head of Technical Services at the School of the Art Institute Flaxman Library for 26 years, graduate of Hyde Park High School, Cornell College, and Dominican University (formerly Rosary College) Library Program and an active member of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA). He mentored many new librarians, led the library from a card catalog to online resources, designed artist book cataloguing software and was known internationally as an expert in this area. Fred was a lifelong Chicagoan, an artist, a bookbinder, an expert cook, a lover of jazz and WBEZ puzzles, and an aficionado of Chicago history, architecture and WPA era murals. He sought to promote freedom of speech and international peace through his support of the ACLU and the Adopt-a-Minefield campaign. Husband of Barbara Giloth; father of Christopher and Elizabeth; son of Jean Hillbruner and the late Frederick Hillbruner Sr.; brother of Michael Hillbruner; brother-in-law to Copper Giloth and John Dubach, Robert Giloth and Kari Moe, Sandy and Stuart Harris; and uncle to Beryl, Emma, Jack, Lian, Sean, Stephen, and Sara. Memorial service on Sunday, November 21st, All Saints Episcopal Church, 4550 N. Hermitage, Chicago, IL, 60640, at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers donations to: The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) 125 Broad St. 18th Floor New York, NY 10004 (888) 567-2258 or Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ) Navy Pier 848 E. Fred and I were in library school together. I always admired his sense of humor, artistic sensibility, and goodness. The world was a better place for Fred being in it. He will be missed.
