He was my program director and forever my
mentor for clinical neurology. To this date, when stuck, I often think how would Frank approach this problem, what would Dr. Rubino do. After I graduated, I kept in touch and recall how much he treasured his daughters and family. I would be happy to talk with them or others who looked up to him. With fond memories and thoughts of his family, Rita Shapiro ([email protected])

Frank Rubino, MD will always be remembered. I was fortunate to have been able to call him my mentor, role model and friend. He loved everything about neurology (patient care, teaching, reading). To this day, when facing a challenging decision, I regularly ask myself "What would Dr. Rubino do." He loved his family and often talked about his daughters and grandchildren. Although he is no longer physically here, I hope that they will always feel his love. His patients, students and colleagues will never forget him.

Several years ago, as result of a health problem, I was referred to Dr Rubino.
I found him to be thorough, kind, compassionate and very professional and caring- the hallmarks of a Mayo physician.
May God Bless his life-his memory, his family and those whom he taught and mentored through the years.
My deep and sincere sympathy to the family.

"The Chief" was the ultimate clinician and role model for dozens of neurologists in the Chicago area. He was a master teacher, who made Neurology "come to life," and influenced many to join the field. While at the Hines VA Hospital, he devoted every Saturday morning to teaching residents and students with live patient interviews and exams. That conference was like Papa presiding over Thanksgiving dinner---if you came late, you were forced to sit up front, and answer more questions (the Dunkin' Donuts were opened and eaten only after some intelligent thoughts were spoken). If you didn't "show up for dinner," Papa made you feel incredibly guilty; but if you came, what a feast you had. I'm convinced that single conference was the most important educational experience I had in my life. God bless such a concerned and dedicated man, Frank Rubino.

Dr. Rubino touched so many, many lives with his gentle caring spirit. I was his secretary for several years and his dedication to teaching and caring for the sick was always above and beyond. Many, many residents and fellows benefited greatly from his passion for teaching. He was always very professional with the paramedical staff yet very approachable and kind. I believe he was everything a patient would expect from a Mayo physician. He made my job a real challenge as everyone wanted to be treated by Dr. Rubino. I certainly do thank God for having known him and the privilege of working with him. He will surely be missed by many.

Dr. Rubino ("the Chief") was my mentor. He was the most compassionate and caring physician I have ever known. What a teacher! He loved his family, and was proud of his daughters, son-in-laws and grandchildren. He will be missed by all of us. I'm comforted by knowing that he is now at peace in a better place. His memory lives on for eternity in those whose lives he touched. I'm grateful to have been one of those fortunate people.

I am grateful that I sat down and talked to my dear cousin Frank at our family reunion two years ago. We had a wonderful talk about his life, his children, and grandchildren. I am thankful that I was able to tell him how much my dad adored him. Frank, God had his hands on you as you healed so many and guided and encouraged many others. I hope in heaven you are celebrating with the angels and those who went before you. Godspeed...Your cousin, Michele

Our deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Rubino. Our husband and father, Vladimir P. Machalek, was under Dr. Rubino's care in the Neurology Department at Hines Veterans Hospital in Maywood, IL. in the 1980's. The kindness and compassion that he exhibited towards his patients made him a credit to the medical profession, and we share your loss.
