Frank Hogan Obituary

Hogan, Frank

Visionary Educator, National Leader of Independent Schools, Man of Integrity.

Francis Joseph "Frank" Hogan III (85) passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on June 27, 2022. in Point Loma, California where he had retired five years ago.

A proud, loving husband and father, he was devoted to his family. He is survived by Nancy, his loving wife of 48 years, and children Frank IV (Laura), Thomas, Beth Corley (Mark), Tom (Annaleis), Eric (Audrey) and David, and grandchildren Katie, Jack, Maggie, Emily, Martha, Danny, Katie, Alison, Kristen, Thomas, Tess, Liam, and Charlie. Patriarch of a large and very close family, he leaves his younger brothers James (Ann) and Michael.

Frank's values originated in the Rogers Park neighborhood where he was raised. There he developed his life-long commitment to the Jesuits and Sisters of the Holy Child. Frank embraced these principles, they flowered in his cherished alma maters, St. Ignatius, Loyola Academy (1953) and Loyola University (1957).

Before embarking on his career in education, Frank served in the U.S. Army and worked with his father, television and theatrical booking agent Frank J. 'Tweet' Hogan, executive producer of the "Bob Newhart Variety Show" and previously leader of the Drake Hotel favorite dance band 'The Tweet Hogan Orchestra."

A nationally recognized educator, Frank began his career as Assistant to the President at Loyola Academy and served as Headmaster of three independent schools, Elgin Academy (1975-1985), Ransom Everglades School (1985-1992 Miami, FL) and The Latin School Chicago (1992-2004.)

The Hogan Building at Ransom Everglades and the Latin Middle School Commons were named in his honor. The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education honored him with the Robert Bell Crow Memorial Award in recognition of his distinguished service.

A leader in independent school education, Frank was a transformative power. He arrived at the Latin School with a vision to build a more diverse and dynamic school that would provide students and teachers with the intellectual, physical and financial resources to do their best work. He expanded and enriched the school's academic program, student achievement, parent involvement and faculty initiatives and led it to embrace the city.

Frank possessed an uncanny instinct for seeing hidden potential in people, and in institutions of learning. He drew great joy from elevating those around him.

He lived a life of service. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Loyola University of Chicago, Sacred Heart Schools (Sheridan Road), Casa Cornelia Law Center (Sisters of the Holy Child, San Diego, CA) and Miami Children's Hospital.

He loved making education better. He loved reading, sports, music, art, architecture, and all things Irish (especially Irish music, art, and travel within Ireland.) And, of course, Loyola University basketball.

Preceded in death by his parents Frank and Monica Hogan.

Oh, I send my sympathy to the entire Hogan family! I was one of those young people he took a chance on at Elgin Acadmey, with zero teaching experience. I was acquainted with Latin, however, and he was desperate to find a middle school Latinist (and dorm mother), so I was hired. My most vivid memory of him? A Halloween party at the headmaster's house. I had been at Elgin Academy only
two months, and was astonished to be invited to this costumed faculty bash. With little time (and less imagination), I went down to the Salvation Army and bought everything I could find in pink. So, dressed as a bizarre "Pink Lady", I found myself dancing with the headmaster, at which point I also found myself falling on the floor, tripped up by my very pink high heels. He gallantly helped me up and the dance continued. I will always remember his trust in me, and his chivalrous behavior at my time of need. Requiescat in pace, Magister!

My deepest sympathies to your family. Your Father was very kind to me when he was Headmaster at EA and I will always have fond memories of my time there.

Like so many of the posts listed, I also got my start as an Admission Director from Frank. After working for thirteen Heads during the past 35 years, I can wholeheartedly say that Frank was the best. He hired me without any experience and guided me throughout my entire career. I owe so much to him. There´s no one like him and I was blessed by his knowledge, caring spirit and genuine concern for others.

I have been indebted to Frank Hogan ever since he reached out to me during a bleak moment in my career in 1989 to see if I would be interested in "coming down to Miami to be our director of college counseling and lick your wounds." It took me a while to key into Frank's wisdom but eventually I got smart, said Yes to his offer, and have been in college counseling work ever since. I feel so grateful to Frank for so many things: his taking the time to visit me and counsel me while I was trying to make up my mind about that Miami job (two gems from that meeting: "If I'm going to be hung by a mistake, I want to be sure it's my own mistake"; "The trick is not to be simplistic about complexity but to find the simplicity within the complexity"; his trust as a leader; his uncanny ability to drop by just when a conversation was needed; his unflappability; his sense of fun and risk; his ability to be, always, three to four steps ahead of the rest of us; his (and Nancy's) generosity (I would never have weathered the transition to Miami if they had not so graciously let me stay in their pool house while I figured things out; his love of jazz; his love of kids in all of their manifestations. The world of education and many other communities have indeed lost a great one. Thank you, Frank.

Talk about "seeing hidden potential"... When Frank hired me as a math teacher (in 1980) I had had no experience teaching, no training as a teacher, and a degree in English. I'm still at EA, so it seems to be working out...

Having graduated in 1979, Frank Hogan was the Headmaster I associate with Elgin Academy. Of course, I was just a kid when I was in his orbit, but he was always well-meaning, articulate, gracious and respectful when he interacted with or addressed the student body. For that I will always appreciate having him as an example.

I am so very sorry to lose one one the really great guys. Frank taught me so much. He will be remembered by so many. Ransom is today what he made it.

My deepest condolences to the Hogan / Soldau clan. Mr. Hogan had an enormous impact on me during my time at EA and beyond. I will be forever grateful for all that I learned from the example that he set for us.
