Piegl, Fr. Fred was born in Chicago, on November 12, 1942. He passed away from complications of surgery in the evening of August 26th. Fr. Piegl was a graduate of DePaul University, with a B.A. in Philosophy in 1964. He completed his theological studies in Rome and Pamplona, Spain, where he earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy. He was ordained to the priesthood on August 19, 1970, in Madrid, for the Prelature of Opus Dei. In his youth he was an avid motorcyclist (mostly Harley-Davidson). He was also a technology enthusiast, proficient in audio equipment, computers, and many other things. Fr. Fred will be remembered as a dedicated priest who spent much of his life as a priest hearing confessions, teaching Catholic doctrine, and personally directing many souls who came to him for guidance. As an educator, he shaped a whole generation of students at Northridge Preparatory school in Niles, where he was chaplain until the mid-1990's. In his last assignment he was working as the chaplain of Midtown Center and an assistant pastor at St. Mary of the Angels Church. His wake will take place at St. Mary of the Angels (1850 N. Hermitage, Chicago) on Thursday, August 28th, 3 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held at St. Mary of the Angels on Friday, August 29th, at 10 a.m., followed by interment at Queen of Heaven cemetery (1400 S. Wolf Rd., Hillside). He is survived by his brother Ron, aunt Mary Catherine Gordon, and extended family. 773-486-0258

Father Fred would go anywhere to hear a confession.
In many ways he was a simple man, yet wise.
I will miss his wisdom, patience, humor, guidance and faith.

I enjoyed hearing his stories of when he was in a motorcycle gang in the early 60's as a young man. At 6'5", Fr. Fred was an imposing figure, and it intigued my imagination to think of a priest as a Harley rider. He was a dedicated, kind man and good priest. We will miss his presence.

What a wonderful man and a Saint. I first met Fr. Fred at St. Joseph's Home in Palatine at a Men's Evening of Recollection several years ago. Afterwards, I thanked him for what he was doing and he humbly implied that he wasn't anything special and that he was happy to do it. He cared about people. My family and I will miss him. He was a very special person.
