Floyd Miller Obituary

Miller, Floyd Glenn

Floyd Glenn Miller, 85, of Chicago, died on January 11, 2021 of COVID-19. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Hoffmann) Miller for 58 years. Devoted father of Liesl (Kenneth) Orenic, Andrew (Tanya) and John (Maia) and loving grandfather to Frances and Lucinda Orenic and Charlotte and Henry Miller. He is preceded in death by his parents Harvey Schiffermiller and Alice (Koch) Schiffermiller. Floyd, a proud Chicagoan, lived all his life on the North Side. He graduated from Von Steuben HS, earned a PhD in Engineering at the U of IL and taught at UIC for three decades and was a beloved mentor, especially among first-generation students in graduate studies. In his work Floyd was especially interested in transportation and workplace safety issues. He and Elizabeth built a residential real estate business on the north side and earned the friendship and respect of many in this endeavor. Floyd loved travel and adventure, especially by train and explored all seven continents. He was a marvelous storyteller and jokester and made friends everywhere he went and was excellent at keeping in touch. He will be greatly missed by so many. Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Resurrection Lutheran Church, the Stephen A. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship at the U of IL Foundation, the Parkinson's Foundation or the Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago. My condolences to the Miller family. Floyd and Beth hosted me as a guest student in their home way back in the 80ies. I am sad to come accross the sad news of his passing away today thinking of my host parents from that time and searching in Google after so many years to see, if there is a chance to contact the family again... A few days late... What a sad coincidence... Thanks for your warm hospitality and my deepest condolences.

I was so sorry to hear that this dreadful disease took Floyd. We were both engineering faculty at UIC from the beginning. He was always upbeat and positive, most valuable qualities over the years.

Floyd was a very gracious and helpful person. He helped me professionally at the CTA back in the 70 and 80s. We lost touch but recently we met and caught up. He will be missed,

Floyd Miller was a 3 decade UIC colleague of mine who prided himself as a `city guy´, as I am, and his gift of word-smithery included good natured mockery of suburban-dwelling faculty fleeing the office at night lock-stepped to a commuter train schedule while we knocked a couple back at a Greek bar on Halsted street. Floyd had a flair for communicating with students that I envied. It extended to his department colleagues to the point that he became an unofficial spokesman for us with the administration. His talents have not, and probably will not, be replaced.
