Florence Miller Obituary

Miller, Florence Attaway ASC20030 was born the first of three children to the union of Florence Perry and Dr. William Attaway. She spent her childhood with her sister, Ruth and brother, William in Vicksburg, MS. When Florence came to Chicago, she trained as a teacher at Chicago Teachers College. Her bachelors and masters degrees are from the University of Illinois at Urbana. There she enjoyed several years with her husband, Jerome and daughter, Florence. The varied, interesting and extensive career of Florence has been as a Chicago Public School teacher and administrator. She began her career at Betsy Ross Elementary School as a teacher and later as a librarian. After many years Florence moved to Crane High School. There she was a teacher, librarian and administrator-assistant principal for the remainder of her 50 year career. The student population of over 5,000 expanded to include high school, college and police recruits. More than 10 principals passed through to higher positions. Her responsibilities included curriculum, organization, programming and discipline. Florence was also busy serving adults at Wendall Phillips High School Evening school-as a teacher and administrator. After retirement, Florence continued many community activities including administration and teaching French at Howalton Day School. She also taught several elementary grades and was the assistant principal at Delana Day School in Hyde Park. The many contributions Florence made to west side churches and community organizations are reflected in the students whose lives were changed and motivated to higher standards of living. Their dignity, perseverance, and changes in life are due to her training in their early. This is her legacy. The great rewards of Florence's life came as a grandmother. She was an influential and significant part of the nurturing, development and education of her granddaughters, Ruth and Alice. Florence will continue to live through her daughter and her granddaughters as they continue their lives making significant contributions to society. Many friends have enriched Florence's life. Florence Attaway Miller is survived by her daughter, Florence M. Williams, her daughters husband, Charles and her granddaughters, Ruth and Alice Williams. Visit Guest Book at www.suntimes.com
