Mary Jo Dirkes

November 24, 2008

Dear Kelly Families,

One of my most vivid memories of Uncle Emmett is of him at a holiday party sitting in Aunt Joann's family room at their house in Chicago (off Devon Ave.) There was a girl baby about a year old. I cannot even remember whose' baby but I do recall Uncle Emmett had some dark hair left.

The baby was shy and having trouble warming up to people - and there were MANY PEOPLE. For some reason, Uncle Emmett had decided it would entertain the baby to bark and yap like a dog ---- he was completely uninhibited as he yapped away... as if he were a little doggie instead of the sizeable figure he was. The baby WAS entertained and so were the rest of us! Eventually, a female adult (the mom? or maybe a relative?) was holding the baby and dipping her close to the yapping doggie. The little girl laughed and giggled as the woman took her closer to Uncle Emmett getting close enough for a nuzzle! Soon the family room was filled with adults and kids everyone laughing hysterically. As long as the baby giggled and everyone was laughing, Uncle Emmett continued his yapping, playing the role of doggie completely as he spoke no 'human' language the entire time, his eyes focused on the response of the baby so he could time his yapping and nuzzing.

I am sure there are numerous accounts of such joyful times about Uncle Emmett and young children. He loved children. He loved making them laugh but he also did not mind showing some kids a 'look' which could intimidate.

A more recent memory is how he bought so many raffle tickets at the annual family Christmas party that he was sure to win the biggest raffle item --- and why shouldn't he?

Aunt Ellen and Uncle Emmett's flat located around the corner from St. Vincent's (and Roma's pizza) was a place I spent some summer weeks as a 'kid'. There were always many children but always room for more children. I recall only ONE kid's bedroom which was mostly bed, ONE babies bedroom with a crib, of course, and there must have been a parent's bedroom there somewhere. I recall 'babysitting' with Care drinking Pepsi and munching on potato chips dipped in sour cream.

Perhaps the most memorable images I have about Uncle Emmett is how very happy Aunt Ellen always seemed when she was with him. Laughing, enjoying, teasing...her own person but very much connected with her husband. What a wonderful image that is...

All my love and prayers to you all,
Mary Jo Dirkes
