Emil Weser Obituary

Weser, Emil J., Jr. 87, left this world December 3, 2011 for a special tee time with the Lord. His eight year battle with cancer would have ended sooner if not for the love of his wife of 63 years, Lois. Her ongoing battle with Alzheimer's provided Emil the determination to fight through his own suffering in order to ease hers. Theirs was truly a love that will last "Forever and Ever"! Lois will continue to be supported by their (5) children Dave, Sue, Jim, Paul, and John, along with (12) grandchildren and (6) great grandchildren. Emil was born August 21, 1924, in Karlsruhe, Germany. His family fled Nazi persecution arriving in the Chicago area at an early age. While excelling in numerous sports at Lane Tech HS, Emil's true passion was the game of golf. From a 10-year-old caddy to the tallest PGA pro at 6'-9" to ever play the tour, his love of the game never diminished. He competed against and learned from the likes of Ben Hogan and Sam Snead, providing him with a knowledge of the game that enabled Emil to become one of the most respected teachers in the Chicago, and later Phoenix areas for over 60 years. His book, "The Common Sense Golf Swing", exemplifies what Emil always felt his greatest contribution to golf was; to help others learn, improve, and enjoy the game as he did! His Indian Valley Golf Course and Weser's Pro Shop locations, provided the focal points for those who loved the game. Over the years Emil appeared on many TV and radio programs and in countless newspaper articles. His clients included many high profile businessmen and athletes. But true to his motto of "Never be too big to be small!", Emil never forgot the "Little Guy". Whether taking on and winning against the PGA for true open qualifying for everyone, or donating golf equipment to our troops for all of their sacrifices, he never forgot his own humble beginnings. Anyone who knew Emil came away understanding the true meaning of integrity, hard work, discipline, and most of all common sense, in achieving one's goals in life. Though we are deeply saddened by his passing, we should all be thankful for the ultimate example his life gave us in preparing for our final tee time. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to The Alzheimer's Foundation or Disabled Veterans.

I know this is a long time coming but I wanted to share what an impact Emil had on my life. I was just 21 years old and headed for the PGA tour when I 1st met Emil. He spent countless hours with me in his cramped little shop. He helped me go from an 8 handicap to a +1 over a 14 month period and built me my 1st set of frequency matched clubs in exchange for watching his shop and helping customers. I also remember his faith in God and endless laughter and stories from the Golden era of golf.

We are so saddened to hear of Emil's passing. I leased a portion of his golf shop when he decided to downsize back in 2000, and found him to be an an honest and honorable man, one who always stood by his word, willing to do business on a handshake and an expectation of honorable conduct. Truly a gentleman of the old school, a good and decent man. He will be missed. Our sincere condolences to the Weser family.

My grandpa is an amazing inspiration to me. He raised my mother to work hard take pride in everthing you do, and not be afraid to make a mistake. He taught her how to be a surviver, and not be afraid to stand up for what you believe in no matter the hardship. My mother taught this to me. So thank you Grandpa for being the solid foundation for us all to grow on. His ideals and honor will live on forever in mine and my childrens life for generations to come. And I look forward to when It's my turn to take the trip home to heaven and play a round a golf with my grandpa and dad. I might even get my swing right. I love you Grandpa.

I first came to know Emil working across the street from his shop in Scottsdale. We frequented each others businesses and became friends over the years. Due to nature of his business dealing with me I came to know him and of his life and considered him a great man and a craftsman. He always had time for me and listened to what I had to say. He asked about my family every time he saw me. He would help me work on my golf swing right there in his shop. He called me every Christmas for many years to wish me a "Merry Christmas"not "Happy Holidays" in lieu of sending a card. He took a stance and didn't dance around the issues of what was important to him. I enjoyed knowing him and helping him with his book "The Common Sense Golf Swing" and will truly miss him.
This year the phone call didn't come from Emil and I wondered why but now I know it was only because he was spending Christmas in heaven this year...
