Emil Mittermann Obituary

Mittermann, Emil Frederick was born on September 5, 1919, in Chicago to Joseph and Marie (Haselgruber ) Mittermann. Emil attended Calumet High School in Chicago. A gifted cellist, after graduation Emil toured the U.S as "Fredi Mann" in the early 1940's. At the start of WWII, he enlisted in the army hospital corps, and was stationed in England. At the request of Glenn Miller, he was transferred as Staff Sgt. to the Army Air Force entertainment division. Until his discharge, he was the cellist for the Glenn Miller orchestra and toured throughout Europe. There he met his true love, Margaret Mary Murphy (Peg), who was a U.S. Army Lt. Nurse. They were married on November 8, 1945 and raised two sons in Evergreen Park, IL. Emil worked as a carpenter contractor in his family business, Mittermann Construction, for over 50 years. His musical career also flourished as he continued to perform with Curtis Mayfield, Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini, The Temptations, and Ramsey Lewis. Emil died on September 9, 2007. He is survived by sons: Michael (Lauren) of Fish Creek, WI, and Francis (Mary) of Evergreen Park, IL; five beautiful grandchildren: Michael Jr. (Jaime), Nicholas, Anna, Kathleen and Eric; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Logan. Emil's last gift was to donate his body to the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Bernadette Parish, 94th & Francisco, Evergreen Park, IL at 11 a.m., on October 20, 2007, followed by a time to share memories with family and friends at Palermo's, 4849 W. 95th Street, Oak Lawn, IL. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
