Nelson, Edward R. age 78, of Skokie, beloved husband of Rita M. (nee Zimmermann), loving father of Joseph (Marriane), Juanita Gawron, James, Janet, Jeffrey (Deborah), Jean and Jon (Barbara), devoted grandfather of Timothy, Joey, Catherine (Jimmy), Teresa (Jeremy), Thomas, Kristofor, Patrick, Robert, Amanda and Brandon, dear great-grandfather of Seth, Jacqueline, Jordan, Jaron, Jalen and Justin, fond brother of the late Laverne. Served in the U.S. Navy during WWII; retired from the Chicago Police Dept. after serving 28 years; volunteered at Misericordia, St. Francis Hospital and the Rogers Park Historical Society. Funeral Wednesday, 10:15 a.m., from Haben Funeral Home, 8057 Niles Center Rd., Skokie. Mass 10:30 a.m., at St. Peter Church, Skokie. Interment St. Peter Cemetery, Skokie. Visitation Tuesday, 3 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Misericordia Heart of Mercy, 6300 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago, IL 60660 would be greatly appreciated.
