Donald Klimovich Obituary

Klimovich, Donald J. 78, cherished husband of Marci Buettgen, died of cancer at St. Paul's House Health Care Center, Chicago, on November 5, 2014. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he studied history at Case Western Reserve University, earned an M.A. in history from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, then taught at the University of Illinois Chicago. His love for Chicago history, architecture, and neighborhoods drove him throughout his career, first as a staff member at Chicago Magazine, where he co-authoredChicago Magazine's Guide to Chicago (1983), then with WBEZ, Chicago Public Radio, then for 10 years as a fund-raiser for the Chicago Children's Choir. Don was a warm, witty, generous person who enhanced the lives of all who knew him. He was active in progressive political and environmental causes and remained undaunted in his belief that the Cubs would someday win the World Series. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Greater Chicago Food Depository, 4100 W. Ann Lurie Place, Chicago, IL 60632.

I worked closely with Don for many years at Chicago magazine, and I think of him fondly on an almost-daily basis. He was warm-hearted, honest, and open; increasingly rare traits nowadays. Allen Kelson

Don was a good friend and co-worker. I have fond memories of Don.With exception of the Lutefisk that he liked to prepare at the coffee bar across from my office. My sincere condolences to his loved ones.

In addition to his colleagial spirt at Chicago Magazine, he was fun company on summer trips to the Canadian folk festivals in the early 80s. Consummate gentleman and creative spirit.

I worked many years with Don Klimovich, whom I remember fondly as one of our go-to staff members, whether tasked with major, ground-breaking work, unavoidably dreary rewrites, or day-to-day tasks. He approached everything he did with intelligence, diligence, and integrity. A kind, decent, and thoughtful person, Don was someone I regrettably wasn't able to keep up with in the decades since we parted, but I always did and shall remember him fondly. I will certainly miss Donald. A kind, gentle, generous, and knowledgeable man, who always wanted happiness for others around him.

I met him and Marci during the Chicago Audubon walks. I learned so much from him, he will always be with me while birding.

Coffee at Julius Meinl and enjoying his company and the sausages he brought at my block party are also wonderful memories.

Rest in Peace,

We met Marci and Don when we starting birding at NP Nature Center on Saturday mornings. They led the group and were so welcoming and helpful. We learned much from them and improved our birding skills.

Through the years we saw them often, including waiting at Wikstroms at Christmas where Don could get his herring.

We recently left Chicago, and were very sad to learn of Donald's death. Our thoughts are with Marci at this most difficult time.

We were always happy to run into Don & Marci out birding or grocery shopping or whatever; taking time to discuss the news and our views. Our social circle has a big hole in it now and it feels much too soon for that to have happened. We are going to miss Don so very much.

Don was a true gentleman and a friend who will be greatly missed. He was one of my birding mentors and I will be forever in his debt. My sincere condolences go out to Marci.
