We met Don & Jeannette on the Northern end of Lake Michigan near Leland. They had the misfortune to damage the prop on their boat and they limped into the harbor and we did what we could to help and traveled along in our boat across to Sturgeon Bay where they were going to get their boat repaired. Years of "doggy" Xmas cards followed. I saved them all. When the cards ceased, I sensed what had happened and was sad. To Jeannette & family I send my deepest sympathy and am certain that Don is now in smooth and tranquil waters.

Engineer Roland Cook and Bautz

Bautz von Reuben, a German Short Hair Pointer, was born in Holland and donated to the Palm Springs Fire Department in 1995 by Mr. and Mrs. Don Reuben of Rancho Mirage. He trained with Palm Springs Fire Engineer Roland Cook, who had a 15-year background training dogs with Work Dogs International. Bautz received Federal Emergency Management Administration certification enabling him to search for live victims from many different types of natural and man-caused disasters. They received "advanced level" certification, becoming only one of four teams achieving this level in the United States. The K-9 team of Bautz and Engineer Cook were able to be called upon at any time to respond to disasters designated by the State of California, the Federal Government, or to assist foreign countries.
The pair was called upon when the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center disaster struck. They responded and were at ground zero within 24 hours after the incident happened, and searched tirelessly for many days and nights for live victims.
Bautz and Cook retired from the Palm Springs Fire Department in 2005. Bautz was allowed to just be a dog and pet to the Cook Family. Even in retirement they did demonstrations making countless kids smile by finding them when they would hide from him in the park.
Bautz Von Reuben was an icon. He was the best search dog in the nation and was an excellent diplomat for the Palm Springs Fire Department and for FEMA. Bautz succumbed to cancer on March 6, 2008 at 14 years old. VORAN! JAWOHL Bautz! (voran - go search; jawohl - good dog!)
The Palm Springs Fire Department will always remember Mr. Reuben with fondness and respect.

We are very saddened by Don's passing.
We enjoyed his friendship, his brilliant mind and the wonderful humorous stories he would tell over dinner. Our prayers go will him, Jeanette and his family. He will be missed by many.

I've known Don both personally and within the law business for many years. Don's work was to be well respected. He was a truly talented lawyer. As a respected member of his community, he always went above and beyond to give back to others, and to give to animals. He had a great love of family. A truly find man will be very much missed by family, friends, colleagues and community.

Dear Tim and family, I read Don's notice in the Tribune today. Though I haven't seen him in decades I still remember his wit and wry smile. Condolences,
