Dean Elry Nold
Dean Elry Nold, a resident of Delray Beach for over 20 years, passed away on March 26, 2021 at home at the age of 88. Dean was born May 3, 1932 in Kansas City, Kansas. He grew up in Larchmont, New York and graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ with a degree of Mechanical Engineer. He later went to graduate school at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering, University of Pennsylvania. He was a licensed Professional Engineer in two states.
He worked at the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and the International Telephone and Telegraph Federal Labs (ITT). He taught at Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW) campus for 19 years serving as a Department Chairman and acting School Dean and taught for 10 years at Purdue University Calumet. He retired from Purdue after 29 years as Professor Emeritus. In 2014 he was recognized as one of the 150 Founding Faculty at IPFW.
For ten years he was engaged in several research projects at the NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA. While at NASA he was a Visiting Research Professor in Engineering and Applied Science at George Washington University.
In the Air Force and in the Air National Guard he served as a Communications/Electronics Officer and a Jet Fighter pilot.
While still in High School, he was issued a Merchant Marine Radio Officer license by the USCG. He was an active Amateur Radio Operator (W9KX) for over 67 years.
During retirement Dean and his wife Pat spent summers in Waynesville, NC.
Dean is survived by his wife of over 36 years, Patricia (Dutcher), four children by his first marriage to Mary Ellen (Ohlmann) Warfel: David (Flor) Nold of Fort Wayne, IN, Mary (James) Larimore of Fishers, IN, Jane (Edward) Shriner of Cordillera, CO and John (Alexis) Nold of Southside, AL, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
