Just learned of Dave's death. He worked with my late wife Cathy at The Courage Program for a long time, and they were good friends. Cathy & I enjoyed Dave's company and friendship at various events like Irish Fellowship Club Christmas party and similar events. When I was a rookie lawyer, Dave was on the bench and was a terrific judge. Obviously was a person with a strong sense of right and wrong, and conducted cases without any condescension toward inexperienced, young lawyers like myself. He will be missed. Bryan O'Connor

Dave and I spent three years together in Duluth and we remained friends after coming home.Dave made me a better person and a better man. Dave showed me it was possible to be successful and happy after a hiccup in ones life. Dave would steer customers my way and that made me proud that he had the faith and trust in me to bring his friends and family to me. I last saw Dave about three years ago when he stopped in unannounced with one of his close friends looking for a car. I'm glad I took the time to tell him what he'd done for me and the effect he had on my life. Of course he didn't want to listen but I'm sure he got the message. You changed my life. God bless you Dave Shields.Thank you.

To Dave's family, I was lucky enough to meet Dave over 25 years ago, he was always upbeat and fun to bump into over the years along the path of life. I remember standing at a bar with Dave at the opening of some joint and he showed me his rosary that he kept with him always and told me how it helped him when he was in "college". A terrific guy and a great Irish gentleman, God Bless You Dave.

He was the model to which the judiciary should try to emulate. His kindness, intelligence, humor and ability was amazing. In the over 35 years in which we knew each other, I only remember him smiling and joking. One of the best.

My deepest sympathy to Jan and family. David will be greatly missed by all who knew him, mostly for his fun-loving good nature. He never said an unkind word about anyone, even when it justified. I first met David when he was my instructor at Harper College. He was everyone's favorite as he made learning fun and challenging. May he rest in peace.

Godspeed Judge Shields. You were my dear friend. You loved life and lived it bigger than anyone I knew. You took me under your wing and showed me how to laugh, to embrace life with unconditional joy and acceptance of circumstances. You showed me how to see the law through the heart of a humanitarian. In many ways you were bigger than life but never bigger than the person you were with. You were gracious and forgiving, and with a glint in your eye you were the Irish in all of our terrible beauty. I will miss you greatly, but I carry with me your influence, your friendship and your legacy. May the road rise to meet you, my friend
