David Hinton Obituary

Hinton, David (Dave) Stephen 68, passed away Monday, March 22, 2010 in LaGrange, IL with his family by his side. Dave was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Ann (nee Wood) on January 30, 2000, his brother, Brian, this past December, and his parents David and Alice (nee Scanlan). No doubt, Dave was most proud of his five children, sons, David, Kevin (Claudia), Sean (Tory), and Mark, and his one and only daughter, Keri Leigh. In addition to his own children and two daughters-in-law, Dave is survived by his two granddaughters, Amber and Sophia (Kevin). Dave was the eldest of 11 children (Timothy, Margaret (Pat) McMullen, Maureen (Kenneth) Propst, Christopher, Brian (deceased), Marianne (Charles) Rader, Sarah (Andrew) Bubser, Michael (Anne), Kathleen (Patrick) Sweeney and Philip), and uncle to countless nieces and nephews on both his and Barbara's sides of the family. Dave was born on February 22, 1942 in Scranton, PA where he was graduated from St. Paul's High School. Dave then spent two years in the Navy after which he settled into the Washington, DC area where he met Barbara. Dave and Barbara then moved to LaGrange, IL in 1972 where Dave lived for the next 38 years. It was in the Chicago area where Dave thrived in the hotel business eventually establishing his own company, Hinton & Grusich (h+g), in 1986. h+g still enjoys great success today with son, Kevin in a leadership role there. Visitation will be held Thursday, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., and Friday, 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside, IL. A funeral Mass will take place Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 124 N. Spring, La Grange, IL. Internment Queen of Heaven Cemetery Hillside, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the David & Barbara Hinton Scholarship Fund, St. Ignatius College Prep, 1076 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL 60608.

To the entire Hinton family, I only met Mr. Hinton once when he came to a restaurant I owned. He was very generous and told my husband that when we went to Chicago to look him up and he would show us around, how very kind.I am very sorry for your tremenous loss.

To David Jr., Kevin, Sean, Mark and Keri. I was a classmate and friend of your dad - at St. Paul High School, Scranton, Pa - Class of 1959. As the chairman of our recent 50th reunion, I want to share with you, what I wrote to our class after we heard of your dad's passing:

"Dear Classmates: We were all so close to David and enjoyed his great sense of humor. I am especially grateful to Dave for introducing me to Mary Ann Walsh. Mary Ann and I til the day he died were close to him and would call him often to see how he was doing.

David was fully intending and wanted so much to see all of us at our 50th Reunion in Scranton. But at the last moment, he was suffering too much to make the trip. Even so, he sent in a very generous donation which made it possible for the rest of his classmates to have such a great time at a reduced fee. After the reunion, I sent Dave a package that included all the hand-outs at the reunion. He called to say how much he enjoyed reading about his classmates in the reunion book we published with our classmates' biography.

Please take a moment to look back at page 28. The picture of David's family at his son Sean's wedding that we put in his biography is even better in color. Mary Ann and I have a copy of it and can't get over how handsome his children - - - and his boys look so much like Dave. I have attached a copy of this picture.

Tonight (March 21st) Mary Ann spoke to his son, David, Jr. The family is staying at Dave's home where we could send notes, Mass cards, etc.: 815 Country Club Drive, LaGrange Park, IL 60525.

So glad more than ever that we were together for our 50th!

Love to all and may God have mercy on our friend, David."

Dear David, Kevin, Sean, Kerri and Mark,
Words can't express how sorry I am for the loss of your Dad. When I think of Uncle Dave, I think of his smile, deep voice, his spirited personality and his laugh, boy did he love to laugh-as we all do in this family.
I have so many great memories of your Dad-especially our trips to Wildwood New Jersey every summer. We looked forward to this every year and this was our parents way for us to get to know each other. I am so grateful for this.
I always knew when my mother was talking to your Dad because there was loud laughter coming from the kitchen. He usually called her in route to someplace to keep her updated on his family. He was so proud of all of you!
You lost your Mom and Dad too soon but they certainly did what God called them to do: raise a beautiful family- I know you will carry on their legacy and do it with grace and dignity.
I love all of you and wish I was there with you during this very sad time. Please know my heart is heavy and my prayers are for peace for all of you in the upcoming days, weeks and future.
I love you.

Your cousin,
Alison McMullen Williams

It has been so very long since Dave Hinton and I had a face-to-face conversation. However, I kept up with his activities through other colleagues -- association and hospitality management -- and for sure I remember him well and fondly as if our last meeting were just a short time ago.

Dave was one of those bigger-than-life folks whom one just does not forget. My deepest sympathy to all the Hinton children and their families, and to the Hinton and Grusich family members whom he loved so.

Rest well, David. Celebrate well, children of David, for his was a life worth celebrating.
