David Hill Obituary

I have memories in my pocket. They rattle among the change. .... They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole.... Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

These memories include many wonderful families I was honored to know when I worked with Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago years ago.

I was so sad when I learned of your loss.

I am so sorry for the tardiness of my message. I wish I had known before now of Mr. Hill's passing. Dave, Mrs. Hill...I am so sorry for your loss. There is not much in my young life that I could admire more than Mr. Hill's generosity, joy, and calm. Not to mention the wonderful father he was to my good friend.

So sorry.

I worked for David Hill in the early 1980's as a Receptionist and found him to be a very nice person and respectful of other's feelings. I was really sorry to hear about his passing. He will be missed.

Mr. Hill was an excellent role model for Dave Jr. and me growing up in Inverness. As a child, Mr. Hill always made enjoyable to play over at the Hill household and our Indian Guides outings. My condolences go out to Dave and Mrs. Hill. He will be missed.

Diane- May you find the kind of strength and comfort which comes from God as you mourn the death of your husband.

Diane I knew David as one of his lending banks {Harris} and worked with him and helped grow his company until I retired 10 yrs. agoI admired and respected him and his absence from the Chicago and national home bulding industry will be felt.
I regret missing the service as I am out of state until Aug. and just learned of this today.

I was very sad to hear that David passed away. He was an amazing man that I feel privileged to have known and worked with. While I was part of the company, I also felt like part of the family in many ways. David was always kind, considerate, generous, and a pleasure to be around. I will miss him, and I know that our communities will miss his leadership and generosity. He is in a better place now, and no longer suffering, and I hope that brings some solace to those who will miss him most. He was an inspiration and made the world a better place.

I am saddened to hear of David's passing. A few years ago I was at a dinner honoring Dick Brown's achievements at Cambridge Homes and I was sandwiched between David and Mickey Sanderman of Sundance Homes. Suffice to say, it was a memorable evening of stories and deals and leadership in the housing industry who will miss David's leadership the most.

Although I have been gone from Kimball Hill Homes for quite some time, I have always remembered and treasured the years I spent working with David. I still smile when I recount many of the sayings he used ("Always tell the truth, but don't always be telling it!"). I've worked other places since, but none where I've felt the strength of his leadership and the sense of family he created. When my own family was in trouble, it was because of David that we were able to get through it - I'll never forget his generosity, intelligence and kindness. He was truly a legend and a leader!

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Hill's passing. Mr. Hill was a customer of my limousine service and it was always a pleasure to take him to and from the airport. He was the smartest person I ever drove for and had a answer for any question I asked him.

I had the pleasure of working as a vendor for Kimball Hill for many years. Although my interaction wasn't directly with David, I quite often ran across him in the office. He always made me feel valuable to the KH team and I feel that some of my personal growth came through his guidance. May you all remember the joy of having this man in your life! God Bless!!

I was so sorry to hear about David's passing. My son, Sean Hurtubise, had the honor to serve with David on the Harper College Board of Trustees when Sean was the student trustee. David was so welcoming and served as a mentor to him during that period. I think the lessons Sean learned from David are ones that he will carry with him throughout his personal and professional life. I was so impressed that someone as busy and successful as David was would take the time to spend with a young man who was just starting out. Thank you David and my condolcences to his family.

Our deepest sympathy to all of you and may God bless you with peace and love during this most difficult time. In the 10+ years that I have worked for Kimball Hill, I have many fond memories. On my first day at work David Hill called me and welcomed me to the family.

He was one of the kindest and most gracious individuals that I have known. Diane and David would not only attend our Holiday Parties but would participate as well. They could cut a mean rug. I will always have a smile when I think back on all the memories.

I am so sorry to hear of David's passing. When I think of him, I remember a speaking engagement at the NAHB Conference where we were both on the program. A photographer for the Conference took a picture of me that was particularly awful. When the photo was printed a few days later in the daily newspaper, David saw it, cut it out and sent it to me at my office with a notation: "I would sue if I were you!" A delightful man who will be greatly missed.

I had the opportunity to work for David and Kimball Hill Homes. David built a wonderful team of people and it felt so much like a family. His warmth and sense of humor are will truly be missed. He was a true leader. My deepest condolences on your loss.

I first met David Hill on my 5th day of employment. I was introduced by a fellow associate. We walked straight into his office unannounced. It was casual Friday, and he good-naturedly commented that I was better dressed than the other man. I was left with two impressions. Despite his success and position, he still was an approachable guy and he had a good sense of humor. I liked him immediately. I still work for him 6 years later. I am most impressed by his fruits, those that have nothing to do with homebuilding. He will be missed. May God be with his family.

Although I did not have a day to day interaction with David Hill, as an employee, I did have the pleasure of working with him on a project close to his heart and to many others, the W.I.N.G.S. shelter in Palatine. This shelter is a legacy of his warm heartedness and willingness to help those in need. It was definately a pleasure to have known him and I am proud to say I am an employee of Kimball Hill Homes.

I was very fortunate to work with David for over 19 years. I have many fond memories of learning and growing with him. David was a wonderful man with incredible vision and allowed me to stretch to new levels that I never thought possible. His commitment to helping others also gave me opportunities to be involved in additional areas that have and will continue to make a difference in the world, such as the coordination of building the Wings Shelter.

David was truly a marvelous caring human being who recognized and nurtured his relationship with everyone he met. I was the first Principal at the Kimball Hill School in Rolling Meadows in 1955. As Associate Superintendent of schools until 1985 and Consultant in District 15 until 2008 I was pleased to confer with Dave. He was good friend to us. I highly respected Dave and his Dad. While sometimes frustrating (David could definitely be challenging), he practiced a belief that allowed and encouraged people to rise to the challenge and be the best they could. Your Dad/husband was one of the most provocative people I've ever met. From the first conversation, he challenged me to keep up with him, and I always knew the next meeting would be just as fresh and exciting as the last.

The best thing about Mr. Hill is his unflagging belief in others: that they were as committed as he; as whip-smart as he; as well-meaning as he. That's a kind of optimism that is tough to keep up and even harder to build a life around, but he was a tremendous success in doing so.
