David Hartigan Obituary

Hartigan, David

David Matthew Hartigan

December 28, 1940 -February 25, 2023

A Man of Profound Intellect, Brilliant Wit,

Noble Heart and Absolute Integrity

David Matthew Hartigan (82) passed away peacefully, lovingly cared for by his family, on February 25th, 2023 just blocks from where he grew up in Rogers Park.

The pillar and guiding light to his very close family, he is survived by Kathleen Barrett, and together they were parents of a wonderful family that brought them great joy and pride; five children Rachel Dewey (Chauncey), David L. Hartigan, Peter Hartigan (Vanessa), Alexander Hartigan, Andrew Hartigan (Aimee) and eleven grandchildren Chauncey III, Oliver, Catherine D., David M. II, Margaret, Rohan, Madeline, Alexander II, Michael, Luke, and Catherine H.

Born and raised in Rogers Park, David graduated from Hardey Prep and Loyola Academy. He is a graduate of Georgetown University where he majored in History, a passion that continued through his life. He also graduated with a Juris Doctor from Loyola University Law School.

The depth and breadth of his professional career was astounding. After graduating from Loyola, he joined the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commision as a trial lawyer investigating securities fraud until his appointment to the United States Attorney's Office.

As Assistant U.S. Attorney, Northern District of Illinois, David served as the Chief of the Tax Division, Deputy Chief of the Civil Division and litigator in the Criminal Division. He uniquely served on a bi-partisan basis under four U.S Attorneys Bauer, Hanrahan, Foran and Thompson.

In the private sector, David was a founding partner of Hartigan & Ward. Later, he became a Partner at Wilson & Mcilvaine and Altheimer & Gray.

Furthermore, he served in several consulting and board level roles in politics, law and non profit sectors:

Catholic Conference of Illinois, Legislative Counsel, representing Cardinals Cody & Bernardin and the Catholic Bishops of IllinoisHotel Employee and Restaurant Employee International Union (HERE), Trustee & Chairman of the Finance Investment Committee with over 250,000 employeesARDC - Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission, Chairman appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court for over 10 yearsCatholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago, Chairman for over 10 yearsFederal Bar Association, President Chicago Chapter Goodman Theater, Board of TrusteesShakespeare Marionette Company, Board MemberJuvenile Diabetes Foundation, Trustee

But more than anything else, his expansive love extended to the entire Hartigan Clan, his nephews and nieces, John Hartigan (Maureen), Elizabeth Connelly (Matt), Laura Jenkins (Jeff), Cristina Soeiro (Stephen Collins), David Soeiro, Aileen Caffrey (Henry), Andrew Furlong, and Jonna Hirsch (Brent). And he leaves his older brother Hon. Neil F. Hartigan (MaryLou), sisters Mary Soeiro (Raul), and Coletta "Itti" Furlong (John). He was preceded in death by his parents. Coletta and David Hartigan and his sister Aileen.

Friends - when you were a friend of David, you were a friend for life. He always put others first and had an uncanny way of knowing who needed his love and support the most. David will be deeply missed.

I knew David all through St Ignatius Parish and Loyola Academy. He married the prettiest girl, Kathy and I never knew anyone who didn´t like him. I am saddened to hear of his demise. My prayers are with all of his family!

My cousin Dave was always pleasant and had a great sense of humor. We were a year apart in age and I always enjoyed him at family gatherings.
We even had a great double date when we were in college.
I am sending my sincere condolences to all the Hartigan family.

Our deepest condolences to the entire Hartigan family. Reading about David's long and fascinating life, his love for his family, and his generous civic engagements was inspirational. David certainly made Chicago and Illinois a much better place leaving a true legacy for his grandchildren to aspire to. We worked with his son Andrew, an MAI Appraiser for years whose professionalism and integrity are remarkable. Apples don't fall far from the Tree. I was delighted to learn that David was a Trustee to H.E.R.E. the Hotel Employees & Restuarant Employees union which I was a member of during my college years. Warmly, Andrea Raila

I had the privilege to know and work with David Hartigan when he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Goodman Theatre. You could not find a better advocate and supporter for our work. Plus his wisdom and leadership always help keep the company moving forward towards our goals. Personally, he was always a joy to be around and I only regret that our circles did not intersect more in recent years. My gratitude and appreciation for all that he achieved and his beautiful family is enormous. I send my sympathy to his wife and family along with all from the Goodman who knew him.
