I am a friend of Dave's from Carleton. I have many warm memories of intra-mural broomball and softball, barbeques and roadtrips to the Twin Cities with him. I am sure that all of Dave's friends from Carleton join me in saying that we will miss his playful sense of humor and his friendship. He left us much too early.

Dear Gassel Family,
We wanted to express our sympathies to you in this very sad period. While we did not David well, we knew of him from Kevin's childhood on the north shore and his Hillcrest days and I knew of him as Debbie's older brother from our days at Chippewa. Our hearts are saddened that you have experienced this loss.

I will truly miss David and the strength and encouragement he has given me over the more than 30 years we have been friends. There is now a big void in our group of guys that cannot ever be replaced but we all have his memory which will live in all of us for the rest of our days. David has always been there for me though many very difficult times and his positive outlook, great compassion and true friendship will be with me forever. I will never forget his words of encouragement and the unconditional support he has given me.
To all of the Gassel family, thank you for the honor to serve at Divid's funeral and thank you for the family you have been to me.

I will never forget his great sense of humor and his fierce competitiveness on the ice. He would always push you to be the best. As long as I have known him (over 18 years), he never gave up on anything. He was truly an inspiration. I will miss you on Saturday mornings.

Words can't express the sorrow of losing such a wonderful, kind, compassionate, loving and selfless person. Dave showed courage, strength and took care of everyone else first. I can't imagine a better legacy. He was taken much too soon. I hope you find comfort in each other and in his memory as there are so many wonderful memories I have of Dave with his family, with us as friends, his joy in music, hockey and in life. He was a role model and inspiration to me and will always hold a special place in my heart as he taught me so much about strength, courage, grace and dignity. Dave will be missed greatly. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Someone wrote this to me, and I hope it comforts you in some way.
"God saw him getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so he put his arms around him
and whispered come with me
with tearful eyes we watched him
and saw him fade away
although we loved him dearly
we couldn't make him stay
a golden heart stopped beating
hard working hands to rest
god broke our hearts to prove to us
he only takes the best..."

Dave had a real strength of character, dealing with adversity better than anybody I know. We should all be able to learn a lot from him. He will be missed at Johnny's on Saturday mornings.

Such a easy going devoted father and friend. I'll miss him at work and around the card table.. We lost a truly genuine good guy and a fairly decent spades player. If I know Dave he'll probably will share his lunch with the angels like he did with me. I'll think about him often every birthday as matter of fact. he died on my birthday. Bye Dave.
