Darryl Stingley Obituary

CHICAGO (AP) - Former New England Patriots' receiver Darryl Stingley, who was paralyzed after a hard hit during an NFL exhibition game nearly 30 years ago, has died. He was 55.

Stingley was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital early Thursday after he was found unresponsive in his Chicago home, according to Tony Brucci an investigator with the Cook County medical examiner's office.

An autopsy was scheduled. The cause of death was not immediately available.

Stingley played football until August 12, 1978, when the 26-year-old receiver went up for a pass during an exhibition game and was hit from behind by Oakland Raiders' safety Jack Tatum. The hit broke Stingley's neck and left him a quadriplegic.

Stingley was born and raised in Chicago. He was a star running back at John Marshall High School. He attended Purdue on a football scholarship.

In 1973, he was a first-round draft pick of the Patriots, owned by Robert Kraft.

"On behalf of the Kraft family and the entire Patriots organization, we're deeply saddened by news of Darryl Stingley's death, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Stingley family at this time," said team spokesman Stacey James.

Stingley, who used a wheelchair, became a symbol for violence in the game. He wrote a book about his experiences entitled "Happy to Be Alive." It was published in 1983.

He served as executive director of player personnel for the Patriots and often visited paralyzed patients.

In a 1988 Associated Press interview, he talked about the day that changed his life.

"I have relived that moment over and over again," Stingley said. "I was 26 years old at the time and I remember thinking, 'What's going to happen to me? If I live, what am I going to be like?' And then there were all those whys, whys, whys?

"It was only after I stopped asking why, that I was able to regroup and go on my with my life," he said.

Stingley regained limited movement in his right arm and operated his electric wheelchair on his own.

In 1993, Stingley started a nonprofit foundation in Chicago designed to help inner-city youth.

To the Stingley Family,
I remember the late Howard Cosell interviewing Darryl about 2-3 years after his accident and Darryl telling Howard that "I AM SORRY THAT IT TOOK THIS TO GET ME CLOSER TO GOD." I cannot tell you how Darryl's courage touched me and I have used his life story in so many Bible Studies, sermons, and other opportunities. His was a life of courage and determination and he lived out the Christian walk in the way it should have been. There should have been a movie made about his life and what he accomplished after his paralyzing hit. I wish I could have done this when he was alive. But I thought you all should know how his life touched me. My name is Dante Marola and I am glad for this opportunity. Thank you and God Bless.

To the whole family of Darryl Stingley,
I was so sorry to just recently hear of Darryl's passing. I was a classmate of both Andrea and Wayne, and met Darryl a couple of times at football games at EIU. I was thrilled for him when he went pro and always cheered for the Patriots when he played. Then there was that tragic day I heard of his accident on the radio. He has been in my prayers over the years. He was an excellent example to young athletes. May he rest in peace and may our Lord continue to be with his whole family. He left you many happy memories, I'm sure.
Sincerely,

Joyce Brooks

Watching Darryl catch a football as a young boy, was a true blessing. I remember how heart-breaking and perplexing it was to discover that Darryl was paralyzed. But I remember like it was yesterday when Darryl appeared on national T.V., as I was feeling so sorry for him, he was filled with joy becasue of his faith in Jesus Christ. I couldn't understand how he had so much joy after such a tragedy?? Darryl now I understand that joy. You were an amazing example of true faith. See you there!
Your fan.

Dear Darryl, Though you never knew the many fans you HAVE, you were in our hearts and prayers. I watched on many sundays when you would miraculously pull a badly thrown ball from the sky and make something of nothing. As great as these things were, your greatest gift to me, was your courage to succeed after your life changed. Your strength to continue to fight, and grow made me understand that adversity is just another opponent in an un-numbered jersey. Darryl, you are and will always be my favorite New England Patriot, and in my heart you will be missed. God Speed and may the fields of Heaven contain hash marks, mid field, and end zones to score in. Darryl, thank you for the sacrifice you and your family made each season you played football.
May your family find peace and may God hold them tight. All my love.
Your unknown fan and friend.

I loved watching Darryl play. He put all he had into the game. I saw the game. It reminded me of another sports tragedy.. Tony Conigliaro. Darryl, you showed people how to handle life's challenges with courage, with hope and with faith. You were an inspiration throughout your short life.

I just found out about Darryl's passing a week ago today and I am devestated. I never met Darryl in person but I talked to him over the phone long distance after my friend was paralyzed in a high school football game. For the few times that I talked to Darryl he was nothing helpful and sincere to me. He didn't even know me but offered me helpful advice about what my friend was possibly going through. Darryl you will be missed.

Dear Stingley family,

I remember meeting Darryl when I was 14 years old at a charity basket ball game he played in. The event took place on the campus of Providence College in Rhode Island. It was the Patriots vs the New York Giants. I remember meeting my favorite New England Patriots player and telling my friends how he took time out to sign a team photo.

God Bless You Darryl.

April 17, 2007

I was a little kid, maybe 8 years old, when I met Darryl in 1975 or 76. One of my best friends at the time was Charlie Sumner's (Pat's Def Coordinator, I believe) kid, Colin. He invited me to a Saturday pre-game walk-through at Schaeffer Stadium (later Sullivan Stadium, Foxboro Stadium). It was awe inspiring to be around the players on the field. However, only two players paid any attention to me, big number 50, Sam Hunt, and Darryl Stingley. Sam just wanted to chase me around trying to tackle me, but Darryl stopped to talk to me, played a little catch, teaching me how to hold my hands when receiving a football. From that day forward, my favorite player was Darryl, and there was no second place.

I don't need to go into how devastating his injury was to me as a fan, because he remained a hero in his post-playing days.

I will always remember your kindness, Darryl. Thank you.

Dear Tina and family,

I'm so sorry on your loss. I NEVER FORGOT Darryl or you, I was in Eden ICU right across from Darryl. I almost died, then woke up the next day to find Darryl fighting for his life across from me.

I never forgot.

I was inspired and followed his life throughout the years. Always hoping for the best for him and for your family. My mom, Barbara, and you became friends because you were both at the hospital a lot, I went in September 15, 1978.

There's so much I want to say... I can't tell you how much of an impact Darryl had on me at that horrible point in my life. I was 17 and never forgot, I'm 45 now and I was just devistated to hear the news. I'll always thank him in my heart for what he taught me.... to be happy to be alive!!! Gina

Usually when a person experiences success they become the target of jealousy and negative comments. I've never heard anyone: student, teacher, administrator, coach, athlete, etc. offer anything other then admiration for Darryl. Even after a devastating injury he courageously continued to be an activist and role model. Certainly the entire Marshall community is proud of Darryl. (faculty '59-'93)

Having met Darryl and his lovely wife at the Patriots,1776 Club dinner after the draft, along with a group of the best player draft the Patriots ever had.Spending the evening talking with him,it wasn't long for one to figure out the type of person he was!Proud of his wife and family, joyful for being drafted by the Patriots and thanking god for the gift he had been given in life. Some of todays atheletes can take a look at his life and what he represented!Hard work, love of one's family and religion, above all,his final fight in life in which he so profoundly committed himself to life in a wheelchair, with no regrets.Love for his god&family.
Nobody will ever know the pain he went thru at such a young age, with his future in front of him,but Darryl, true to life showed us what dignity really is!
Deepest regrets to his family! He will always be with you!

I'm grew up a fan of Darryl Stingley and the Patriots all the way from Gainesville, Fl. I first saw him play in 1977, I was in the 7th grade and wanted to be just like him. He was and will always be my hero for what he did on and off the field. Our Little league numbers did'nt go over 50, but once I got to High school I wore his number as a tribute to him. He was an inspiration, and will truly be missed. I wish the family great strentgh during this time.

I have had the great pleasure of knowing Darryl for over 20 years. He was also the Godfather of my daughter Ashlee Jordan (sister of Michael Jordan). We spent alot of time together doing the 80's and 90's at the Chicago Stadium, before the United Center. Darryl was my source of strength when I was going through the days of story seeking media. He was a very wise and peaceful man. He had a certain type of calmness and sincere kindness about himself. Some of the most enjoyable times of my life was spent talking, laughing and enjoying sporting event with him. My daughter and I will miss him deeply.

I was at that particular game when Darryl Stingley took that vicious hit. He was completely motionless and I was very, very concerned about whether or not he would ever get up from that hit. Well, Darryl Stingley not only got up from that hit, but he showed America what true courage and faith is all about. He was, and is, a credit to his family and to his country. You know sometimes we wonder why tragic events unfold as they do. The question is often asked, does God make mistakes. The answer is no, God don't make any mistakes. Brother Stingly served as a symbol of inspiration and hope, to all who knew his plight, to all who knew him and those that knew of him. Brother Stingly was a strong black man who exibited the character of a God loving, God fearing man who knew God. Darryl finally figured out that if Jesus could stay on the cross to suffer, bleed and die, he knew he had to do the same and so Darryl bared his on cross. To be absent from the human body is to be with Jesus.
May the power of Christ Jesus rest his soul in eternal life of peace, Amen.

To the Stingley Family:

Growing up and into my teens, I would sit in the old Knickerbocker Arena on hot, Summer Saturdays and watch Derek Stingley, Darryl's son, play arena football for the great Albany Firebirds. I once praised a play by Stingley and a man next to me turned to me and said: "You should have seen his father play!"

With that said, I'd like to extend my deepest sympathy to the Stingley family, on behalf of the true Firebirds fans from NY's Capital Region.

The longest standing ovation I have ever witnessed happened when Darryl came back to Foxboro Stadium after his injury for a Monday Night game. The ovation was so long they had to delay the start of the second half (which I have never seen the NFL do before). It was phenomenal and Darryl deserved it. Rest in peace.

Donna Jackson- Ward

April 8, 2007

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Stingley family, a long time ago we met at the Bulls game and I will never forget the look on Darryl's face as I placed that championship ring on his finger. He was a true inspiration to me in many ways. Throughout the years I have never forgotten him and now rejoice just by knowing that he is with his Lord & Savior. God Bless you all as you mourn his passing and celebrate his life.

I had the rare honor and privilege of meeting Darryl several times at Bulls games. He always had a smile on his face and when he learned I once worked for the Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints, we had even more to talk about.

He handled things with dignity and grace and never felt sorry for himself. He gave back thru his foundation and became a true role model.

While his family will miss him dearly, all of us who got to know him, even a little, will treasure the memories.

Dear Tina and your and Darryl's children: It's been awhile since we've been in contact, but I think of you both from time to time. We live in North Carolina now and will always remember with endearment living across the hall from you at 400 for so many years.
Love and condolences from Francine Less and Richard Wark
