I worked with Dan at Bell & Howell back in the mid 90's. We spent long hours (all nighters for me) preparing some of the best Power point presentations ever. I was shocked to hear of this tragedy. My heart sank. Dan was a great man, and I believe even a better husband and father to his family. He will be missed.

Dear Sherrie, Lauren, and Jason,

I remember Dan when he and Lauren were in the YMCA Indian Princess program and the Buffalo tribe. Wasn't Dan Chief of the Buffalo for a while? The Fox tribe and the Buffalo tribe had a good time poking fun at each other and Dan was a part of it. He was a good man and I know you were all proud of him and will miss him greatly. Please accept my condolences.

Dear Mrs. Rice and Family,

As President of the BGRA, may I extend my deepest sympathy from both my family and the BGRA family. I had met Dan on 3 different occasions this year and each time, he presented himself as the typical BGRA coach. Warm, friendly, concerned to do it right, and just a pleasure to be around. I am sure that he instilled that personality in his team. Words can never change the outcome of this accident, but to say that I had the brief pleasure to know him just a little, is an honor.

May God hold your family tightly together through this time, and bestow upon all of you a loving ray of hope for a stronger future. Our prayers are with you.

Sherri, Lauren & Jason,

I knew your husband & dad for just a short time. Last January when I phoned to give him the news that he had been approved to manage a Thoroughbred baseball team in the BGRA he was elated. Dan was an important part of the Thoroughbred League, his absence will be missed by all. He was a pleasure to have in my league. Words can't express how sad we feel. Our prayers are with you & your family at this difficult time. My condolence to your family.

To Mrs. Rice and Family,

Our family just met Coach Rice about a week ago when he called to ask if our son Danny could fill in for a player on his team. Danny is ten years old and was so elated that he was called up to play for the Indians. Last Friday, he played a couple of innings until the player showed up. Coach Rice was so kind and positive with our son. He made him feel so good about himself that Danny was on a cloud that night.

On Monday, Mr. Rice left a nice voicemail message thanking us for our support and asked if Danny would be available to play again that night. He was concerned about the weather and uncertain if it would intrude upon playing. He left an inspiring message acknowledging Danny's assistance over the weekend.

Danny, and his dad, Frank were there the night of this trajedy. They were so overwhelmed as we all are now.

Danny is greatly hurt by the loss of his new friend and mentor. He has sat in disbelief, questioning the reality of it all. I told him that Coach Rice gave him a great gift last weekend. He brought out the best in him and encouraged him to do his best. He did, too. Our son needed that shot in the arm this year for a host of reasons. It was almost as if he was touched by an angel.

I thank God for our brief encounter with your husband and father. His kindness touched our child's life in the best of ways.

Danny said that he is playing his next game in Coach Rice's honor. I think that he wil remember him for a long time to come.

May God comfort you all during this unexplainable time of great loss and deep sadness.

Please accept our deepest sympathy and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Very Truly,

Frani and Frank Martino
